Minnesota Pro Takes PWT
Lead in Devils Lake, ND
Devils Lake, North Dakota . . .Bruce Samson (Bruce has two Champion
boats for sale ), Cambridge, MN, netted 27.99 pounds of walleyes to
take the lead in the 
North Central Pro-Am. Fishing with amateur Scott Ziegler, North Platte,
NE, they 
Lindy rigged rocky humps and points to show-off the Devils Lake fishery.
The lake has risen about 22 feet since the In-Fisherman Professional Walleye
Trail (PWT) fished this North Dakota lake in 1992. The fishery has also
exploded, with walleyes the main attraction. Anglers also lauded the great
northern pike action, with “gators” in excess of 20 pounds caught regularly.
In second place is rookie pro Alan Gaston, Eagan, MN, who fished with amateur
Scott Ziegler, North Platte, NE. They landed 23.65 pounds. Holding down
third place are pro 
Daryl Christensen, Montello, WI and amateur Al Sommers, Wahpeton, ND, with
22.95 pounds. Big fish were also part of the Devils Lake story, with numerous
five pound-plus walleyes weighed. The largest fish winning the Bass Pro
Shops Big Fish awards were all over seven pounds. Pro Gaston won $1,650
for an 8.75 pound walleye. Pro Jay Weber, St Cloud, MN, collected $1,000
for a 7.52-pounder. The third and fourth place fish tied and pro Gary Parsons,
Sherwood, WI, and amateur Dale Nelson, Bismarck, ND, each won $887 for
7.42-pounders.
Day one weather remained the same as the past four “practice” days,
sunny and calm. Anglers were
able to explore all corners of Devils Lake, including trolling the
flats, pitching jigs in the standing timber and rigging the rocks. “This
is a unique fishery, not unlike all the bass fishing I’ve done,” said third
place pro Christensen.
Weigh-in festivities on Thursday and Friday take place at Graham’s
Island State Park, west of the
community of Devils Lake. Following Friday’s weigh-in, PWT contestants
will be awarded $203,000 in cash and merchandise prizes.

Big Walleyes Keep PWT
Pro Samson at the Top
Devils Lake, North Dakota . . Lightning filled the dawn skies around Devils
Lake, ND, delaying the
start of the
North Central Pro-Am. Lightning was also on the end of pro Bruce Samson’s(Bruce
has two Champion
boats for sale ) line as he landed 25.36 pounds on day two to out-distance
the In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail (PWT) tournament field.
Samson, a doctor from Cambridge, MN has a total of 52.75-pounds, an average
of 4 1/4 pounds. He’s placed in 50 percent of the 16 PWT tournaments fished.
The second place pro is 
Dan Plautz, Muskego, WI, with 39.02 pounds, and pro 
Mark Brumbaugh, Arcanum, OH is in third with 34.37 pounds. A thunderstorm
forced PWT directors to wait 30 minutes before sending the pro and amateur
anglers on their way today. Cloudy, windy and showery conditions were the
rule, which contrasted with the five previous calm and sunny days.
The leading amateur is Al Sommers, Wahpeton, ND. Amateurs receive the
same daily weight as their pro partners, and fish with different pros each
day. Following the third and final competition day Friday, a total of $203,000
in cash and merchandise will be awarded.
Weigh-in festivities with opportunities to meet the pros take place
at 3 p.m. at North Dakota’s scenic
Graham’s Island State Park, west of the Devils Lake community. At the
final day ceremonies (starting at 3 p.m.) the top five Dee Zee Western
division Championship qualifiers will be announced. Pro Samson leads the
Western Division. The PWT 6-tournament season is split into Eastern and
Western divisions. Bass Pro Shops Big Fish awards were paid for the four
largest day-two walleyes. Amateur Kyle Friedrich, St Cloud, MN, won $1,650
for an 8.76 pounder. Amateur Tim Godding, Browerville, MN, received $1,000
for second place, an 8.03-pound walleye. Third, $850, went to pro Mark
Martin, Twin Lake, MI, for a 7.59 pound fish, and pro Steve Fellegy, Aitkin,
MN, earned $775 for fourth place with a 7.46-pounder.

Pro Bruce Samson Wins Devils Lake $50,000 Walleye
Prize
Devils Lake, North Dakota . . A summer cold front greeted the
North Central Pro-Am field on Devils Lake today with temperatures in the
50-degree range and a gusty 15 - 30 mph northwest wind. The In-Fisherman
Professional Walleye Trail leader after the first two days, Bruce Samson,
(Bruce has two Champion
boats for sale )Cambridge, MN, added 11.86 pounds on the final day
to win with a total of 64.31 pounds.
Samson pocketed cash and a 
194 Fishhunter boat and 200  y
outboard for a $50,000 first prize. (Bruce has two Champion
boats for sale )This is identical to the boat he owns and fished with
all year. He fished the tip of a rocky point in Creel Bay all three days,
Roach rigging with leeches and crawlers. In the strong wind on day three
he back-trolled into the waves or slowly slipped with the waves while running
his Mercury 225-hp Opti-Max. He ran bottom-bouncers on the final day to
maintain contact and keep his bait in front of walleyes. Best depths were
26 to 35 feet. Samson, a doctor, has won money in nine of 17 PWT tournaments
fished.
The second place pro, winning $15,000 was Dan Plautz, Muskego, WI,
with 54.10 pounds. Pro 
Shannon Kehl, Bismarck, ND, earned $10,000 for third. The top amateur,
Al Sommers, Wahpeton, ND won $12,500 worth of PWT merchandise, including
an Arctic Cat 4x4 ATV. He fished with pros
Daryl Christensen, Montello, WI, Les Vietz, Bismarck, ND and Gerrick McComsey,
Pierre, SD.
The biggest final day walleye, 9.21 pounds, was worth $2,150 to pro
Rick Olson, Mina, SD. The second place award, $1,000, went to amateur Terry
Williams, Cedar Rapids, IA, for a 9.17-pounder. Third and fourth, $850
and $775 respectively, went to Donrel Herbolsheimer, Pierce, NE, 7.68 pounds;
and pro Ron Seelhoff, Lewellen, NE for a 6.53-pounder. All big walleyes
in the tournament exceeded 6 1/2 pounds.
For advancing 75 places, pro Jeff Taege, Rhinelander, WI, won the $1,000
Coleman Cool Under Pressure Award. Amateur Terry Nelson, Edelstein, IL,
won $600 for advancing 93 places. Samson won the 
Heavyweight $500 award, and his amateur partner Scott Ziegler, North Platte,
NE won $300 for their 27.69 pound catch on day one. For releasing the most
walleyes, pro Scott Glorvigen, Grand Rapids, MN won the $500 T-H Marine
Live Release award. In association with the Lake Region Anglers Association
more than 85 percent of the 1,039 walleyes were released back into Devils
Lake.
The Lowrance North Central Pro-Am was the final qualifying tournament
of the Dee Zee Western Division. The PWT consists of eastern and western
divisions, and the top five of each division qualify for the Championship,
set for Madison, WI, September 9 - 11. In addition to Samson who qualified
with a 50 pound advantage, other western qualifiers include Sheldon Meidinger,
Bismarck, ND, Dean Miller, Stevens Point, WI, Dan Glucky, Bismarck, ND
and David Anderson, Apple Valley, MN.
Special awards were presented to Devils Lake Chamber of Commerce Tourism
Director Barb Britsch, as the “Key Person” and for coordinating all tournament
activities. The event was held in scenic Grahams Island State Park. Dick
Horner, Park Superintendent, received an award for hosting and providing
an excellent festival site.
The In-Fisherman Angler of the Year leader remains 
Mike Gofron, Antioch, IL, a position he’s held since the second tournament.
Gofron has won money in all PWT tournaments this year and in the last nine
PWT events. The PWT final qualifying tournament takes place on Michigan’s
Saginaw Bay, August 4 - 6.
