Oshkosh WI August 23+24,1997

Bill and Bryan Ball of Waupun Wi, for the second time in three years have won the Wille Products Masters Walleye Circuit Team Walleye Tournament. The brothers weighted an MWC allowable 20.72 lbs and collected a purse of $13,000.00. the top 35 teams shared a cash purse of $52,000.00 with an additional payout for big fish and comeback awards of $4300.00 this brought the total purse to $56,330.00

The 200 team field faced two days of cool weather, rain and murky water. A total of 899 walleyes totaling 1,541.55 lbs. and an average weight of 1.71 lbs.

The Ball brothers who are MWC veterans trolled minnow imitating crankbaits over the mudflats along the southeastern shore of Lake Winnebago.

Brian Ball said the walleyes were scattered and they really had for there fish, They trolled firetiger and chrome/blue cranks through five to seven feet of water. Brother Bill said they first two fish came early and then everything went dead, and they waited for five hours before the next bites came but the walleye gods provided three fish in the last fifteen minutes and they made it back to the weight in on time.

Second place went to Brad Berger and Jim Hughes of Oshkosh Wi. The pair led on the first day but were only able to boat four fish the second day and it cost them the win the finished with a weight of 20.40 lbs which brought them a fine two days winnings of $7500.00 third place went to Tom Brunz of Madison lake Wi and Bill Leonard of Estherville Iowa there luck went good on the second day and were able to weight five fish including the tournaments big fish of 7.54 lbs this was a great improvement from the first day where they ended in 50th place with only two fish weighted on. This brought tem a fast $5,000.00. Walleyes INC own Tommy Skarlis and Chad Kinkaide placed fifth in this tournament weighting in at 19.60 lbs and grabbing $2500.00 in cash.

Tournament anglers donated another $2,000.00 to the MWC conservation fund and this was donated to the Walleyes For Tommorow organization which will use the money for an ongoing rock reef project along Lake Winnebagos eastern shore. On e of the 19 reef placed along the shore this year was named Masters Walleye Circuit Reef. the MWC to date has donated over $16,000.00 to the Winnebago fishery and over $179,000.00 to similar programs in states where the MWC tournaments are held.

The final stop on the MWC tournament circuit is the Mariner Outboard Motors/North American Fishing Club MWC team tournament at the Pentenwell Flowage in Adams County Wi. openings still exist so contact the MWC at 414-761-0657
