WALLEYE TEAM TOURNAMENT
Lake Pepin
Lake City Minnesota
September 12+13 1998
Last update 09-16-98

GRIEVE / ROTHGARN SQUEAK OUT VICTORY AT
BERKLEY TRILENE / LINDY LITTLE JOE MWC FINALE

LAKE CITY, MINN. –
Barry Grieve and Brent Rothgarn of Lake City,Minn.,won  Masters Walleye Circuit (MWC) Team Walleye Tournament held September 12-13 on Lake Pepin (Mississippi River) at Lake City, Minn.  The tourney was the final stop of the 1998 circuit season. The winners weighed a MWC allowable ten fish limit of 33.82 lbs. and collected $13,000.  The top 35 teams shared a cash purse of $52,000.  An additional $4,200 was paid in Big Fish Pot prize money, bringing the total payout to $56,200.Grieve/Rothgarn led after the first day with 21.92 lbs.  They added 11.90 lbs. the final day, which was enough to squeak out victory over second place finishers, Steve Delain (Red Wing, Minn.) and Tim O’Neill (Minden, Iowa) who tallied 33.70 lbs., earning them $7,500.  Third place with 29.14 lbs., worth $5,000, were Glenn Farrell (Ottawa, Ill.) and Dennis Robinson (Tomahawk, Wis.). According to Grieve, “Saturday was a good day.  We caught a lot of fish, but things really slowed down today [Sun.].  We only had two fish in the livewell at 1 o’clock, and the weigh-in was at 2:30.  We got lucky and boated three more fish.” Rothgarn added, “We fished three spots upriver from Lake Pepin.  We did some jigging with minnows, but mostly trolled leech rigs.  Most of the fish came between four to nine feet deep.”  Delain/O’Neill trolled firetiger-colored crankbaits along the rip-rap shoreline in the Point-No-Point area.  They used lead core line with a six foot Berkley FireLine 14 lb. test leader.Farrell/Robinson took their fish trolling below the Red Wing dam, 12 to 14 feet deep, with 3-way rigs consisting of a 1 oz. bell sinker and a floating jig head tipped with a nightcrawler.  Big fish honors, a $1,000 Mariner Outboards rebate certificate and a MotorGuide electric trolling motor, went to Tom Walters (Campbellsport, Wis.) for his 8.64 lb. walleye.  He and partner Andy Schmidt (Malone, Wis.) placed 14th with 25.26 lbs., winning $900. Only 14 of the 200 team field failed to weigh fish.  A total of 1,216 walleyes and saugers, weighing 2,554 lbs. (2.10 average) were caught in the MWC catch and release format.  The MWC Conservation Fund, the only fund of its kind in professional angling, donated $3,000 to the Lake City, Minn. area DNR fisheries office.  The grant will be used for an ongoing walleye telemetry study taking place on pool 4 of the Mississippi River.  To date, the MWC Conservation Fund has donated over $192,000 to fishery related projects in states where MWC tournaments are held. The 1999 MWC brochure, containing entry forms for next year’s tournaments, will be mailed to current MWC members this fall.  Brochures will also be available from the MWC at 3137 W. Hilltop Ln., Franklin, Wis. 53132-9119, or by calling 414-761-0657.  The MWC is a nonprofit corporation which conducts a series of professionally operated fishing tournaments at which family participation and conservation of fishery resources are stressed.  To date the MWC Conservation Fund, the only fund of its kind in professional fishing, has contributed more than $188,000 to fisheries programs in states where MWC tournaments are held.
