PWT Anglers Enjoy Wa r m Day and Good Walleye A c t i o n
Rookie Pro Leads PWT Race on Lake Wi n n e b a g o
Fond du Lac, WI . . . Pro walleye anglers and their amateur partners
fished all corners of Lake Winnebago and the upriver lakes on the first
day of the
Central Pro-Am. They found fish as shallow as one foot and as deep as 20
feet.
The In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail (PWT) anglers tried every
tactic. Former Lake Winnebago PWT winner
Chris Gilman Chisago Minnesota, said, “Today, I fished rocks, mud, cane,
weeds and everything else for two fish.”
Leading the event is rookie pro Steve Bohn, Fairgrove, MI, with 13.34
pounds. His partner, amateur Roy Littlegeorge, Black River Falls, WI, received
the same weight and heads up the amateur field. In second are pro
Tom Keenan Hartley Wisconsin, and amateur Chris Henderson, Leamington,
Ontario, Canada with 12.22 pounds. The third place anglers are pro Bill
Ortiz, Dodgeville, WI, and amateur Jason Wahoske, Ripon, WI, with 10.65
pounds. During the 3-day tournament, amateurs fish with a different pro
each day. A total of 14 limits came to the scales of the full-field of
120 pros and 120 amateurs.
The Bass Pro Shops big fish $1,800 award went to pro Cyril Hill, Orange
Village, OH for a 4.71 pound walleye. Ortiz won $1,000 for a 4.50 pound
walleye. The third largest walleye paid $925 to pro Keenan. Fourth was
worth $850 for pro John Gross, Racine, WI, for a 3.56-pounder.
Weigh-in festivities take place at Fond du Lac’s Lakeside Park West,
starting at 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday. A total of $204,000 in cash and
merchandise will be awarded after Friday’s weigh-in.

Wisconsin Pro Takes Lead in PWT Event on Lake Winnebago
Tom Keenan Hartley Wisconsin fished shallow to take the second day lead
in the
Central Pro-Am on Lake Winnebago. The fishing pro weighed 13.79 pounds
today and leads with a total of 25.71 pounds.
Keenan has recorded three top 10 place In-Fisherman Professional Walleye
Trail (PWT) finishes on Lake Winnebago. In second is pro
Vaughn Cornelius of St Cloud Minnesota (boat
for sale) with 21.13 pounds, while pro
Mike Gofron of Antioch Illinois is in third. He also leads the In-Fisherman
Angler of the Year race.
The leading amateur is Chris Henderson, Leamington, Ontario. Amateurs
fish with a different pro daily; the pro provides all gear and both claim
their boat weight. Day one pro leader Steve Bohn, Fairgrove, MI, slipped
to sixth place.
The anglers fished under calm conditions and sunny skies, a significant
switch from the first day’s 10- 20 mph winds and rain. Lake biologist Kendall
Kamke, when asked why the bite was so tough said, “We haven’t had more
then three days of steady weather this year.” The fish are healthy and
Kamke said research shows approximately one million walleyes over 15 inches
are swimming in Lake Winnebago.
The Bass Pro Shops big fish of the day, 6.37 pounds, was worth $1,800
for amateur Andrew Patton, Bargersville, IN. A 4.50-pounder paid $1,100
to amateur Michael Brunet, Algonac, MI. The third place big fish, 4.19
pounds, earned $925 for Cornelius. The fourth largest fish, 3.88 pounds,
earned $850 for pro Gary Gray, Oshkosh, WI.
Kamke complimented the PWT pros and the way they care for their fish
during the day. Those fish judged releaseable are put back into Lake Winnebago.
Through two days, 80 percent of the walleyes have been released.
The final weigh-in and $203,000 awards festivities will occur at 3
p.m. Friday at Fond du Lac’s Lakeside Park West. Enter the park from highway
45; plenty of parking exists at the site.

Press Release Day Three

PWT $50,000 Title Goes to Wi s c o n s i n ’s Tom Keenan
Fond du Lac, WI . . . It’s now called, “Keenan Cane,” after Tom Keenan
Tom Keenan of Hartley Wisconsin claimed the $50,000 victory in the Central
Pro-Am. He fished the cane beds in Lakes Poygan and Butte des Mortes for
33.80 pounds.
This is Keenan’s first In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail (PWT)
victory. He recorded a fifth, a seventh and a 10th place PWT finish in
1994, 1995 and 1996. The Hatley, WI angler has averaged $15,400 per PWT
tournament fished.
The second place pro,
Vaughn Cornelius of St Cloud Minnesota (boat
for sale) trolled Lake Poygan for $15,000. He weighed 31.11 pounds.
In third was pro
Mike Gofron of Antioch Illinois, who fished shallow rocks and weeds. He
weighed 28.39 pounds for $10,000. Gofron is the only pro to cash a check
in all PWT tournaments this year and leads the In-Fisherman Angler of the
Year race. Top amateur Chris Henderson, Leamington, Ontario, fished with
pros Keenan, Jeff Taege, Rhinelander, WI and Doc Johnson, Denver, CO. He
won $12,500 in cash and merchandise. A total of $203,000 was awarded.
Keenan’s pattern involved flipping 1/8 ounce
jigs with pieces of crawlers to the edges and pockets in the cane. He held
his boat outside the cane and with two calm days was able to control his
boat and precisely position each cast.
Anglers fished all corners of Lake Winnebago and the upriver lakes.
Most found walleyes slightly “off-bite,” but others netted limits in weeds,
cane and on the shallow rocks. Trolling tactics also proved exciting with
spinners and crawlers and crankbaits proving effective. Most popular lures
were #5 and #7 Shad Raps and Storm Baby ThunderSticks.
The overall Bass Pro Shops big fish award went to amateur Andrew Patton,
Bargersville, IN, for a 6.37-pounder. He won $2,300. On the final day amateur
Jon Auck, Wautoma, WI, won $1,800 for a 4.00- pounder. The second place
big fish paid $1,000 to pro
Mark Brumbaugh Arcanum, OH, for a 3.98 pound walleye. In third was pro
Todd Riley Amery Wisconsin (Boat
For sale), who won $925 for a 3.21 pound walleye. Fourth paid $850
to pro Taege for a 3.18 pound walleye. Bass Pro Shops awards of $14,500
were paid out.
The Coleman Cool Under Pressure award went to pro Greg LaMere, Gwinn,
MI, for advancing 79 places. He won $1,000. Amateur Tom Kamp, Fox Lake,
WI, won $500 for advancing 92 places. The Storm $500 Heavyweight award
went to Brumbaugh with a final day catch of 15 pounds. The T-H Marine Live
Release award of $500 went to pro Cornelius. Of the total 924 fish brought
to the scales, 70 percent were judged releaseable by the Wisconsin Department
of Natural Resources biologists.
A special PWT Key Award went to Valerie Rumbuc of the Fond du Lac Convention
& Visitors Bureau for her assistance in organizing the tournament.
The PWT recognized Mike Boede of Lakeside Park for hosting the site in
a beautiful setting alongside the Fond du Lac River.
Leading the DeeZee Eastern division is pro Bill St Peter, Bay City,
MI, after two tournaments. Dean Miller, Stevens Point, WI, leads the Western
Division. The next PWT stop is at Devils Lake, ND, July 14 -16.
