NATHE/THOMPSON WIN
MWC WALLEYE TOURNEY
GREEN BAY, WIS. – Awesome! Fantastic!
Unbelievable! A blast!
So were the praises by anglers of the great walleye fishing at the Ranger
Boats MWC (Masters Walleye Circuit) Team Tournament, held August 22-23
on Lake Michigan’s Green Bay at the city of Green Bay, Wis.Dean Nathe (St.
Cloud, Minn.), teamed with Paul Thompson (Wallace, Mich.), winning the
tourney with a ten fish MWC limit record weight totaling 68.40 lbs., nearly
a 7 pound average. They collected $12,000, plus the $250 Kessler
Big Basket Award for the heaviest second day catch of 31.88 lbs.
The first day Kessler Award and $250 went to John May and Patrick Neu,
Forestville, Wis., with 39.48 lbs., which is a MWC single day five-fish
record weight.According to Nathe, “We fished the same area both days, about
ten miles north of Larson’s Reef in 25 to 30 feet of water. The walleyes
were relating to schools of baitfish. We trolled with in-line planer
boards at 1 m.p.h. or just drifted.”Thompson added, “The fish were very
aggressive, so we used 15 lb. test mono line with a 30 lb. test
FireLine leader. We also used
Hatchet Harness nightcrawler rigs. Just about any color blade worked.
The Hatchet blade gives off a different sound than other spinners.
They really made the difference.” Second place finishers were Bill Leonard
(Estherville, Iowa) and Wayne Stensrud (Madison, Minn.). Their ten
walleyes weighed 63.74 lbs., earning them $7,500. They collected
an additional $1,000 from
for the highest ranking Ranger boat owner competing in the tournament.
Stensrud caught the largest tourney walleye, 11.88 lbs., and was awarded
a $1,000 engine rebate from ,
a
electric trolling motor and $1,100 from the optional Big Fish Pot. Leonard/Stensrud
fished the same area as the winners, using nightcrawler spinner harnesses,
chartreuse-colored #8 blades, from 2 oz.
X-Change bottom bouncers.Third place, worth $5,000, went to Wisconsinites
Mark (Appleton) and Tom Keenan (Hatley), whose ten fish weighed 60.52.
The brothers now lead the circuit in the MWC Team of the Year race with
374 points. The Keenans also fished the Larson’s Reef area using Hatchet
Harness nightcrawler rigs. Explained Tom, “That blade was dominant.
We fished among other boats, but we were catching more fish.”Bob “Kaz”
Kaczkowski, MWC Executive Director, stated, “The Green Bay walleye fishery
is phenomenal. My hat is off to Wisconsin DNR Fish Manager Terry
Lychwick and his staff for their efforts in managing this system.
These are the best weights ever in the 15 year history of the MWC.
Green Bay has to be considered one of the best walleye fisheries in North
America.”The top 35 teams shared a cash purse of $50,960, plus added prize
money of $7,100, a total cash payout of $58,060.The 196 teams caught 1,009
walleyes weighing 4,423.70 lbs., a 4.38 lb. average. Each team contributed
$10 to the MWC Conservation Fund. The $1,960, plus $225 ($2,185)
collected and donated by Kessler-Jim Beam Brands Co. at the tournament,
will be donated to the Green Bay area DNR office to assist in the Bay’s
fish management program. To date, the MWC Conservation Fund has donated
over $190,000 to fishery programs in states where MWC tournaments are held. The
final circuit stop is the /MWC
Team Tournament, Sept. 12-13 on Lake Pepin (Miss. River, Pool 4) at Lake
City, Minn. Some openings still exist. For further information
and entry forms, contact the MWC at 414-761-0657.The
MWC is a nonprofit corporation which conducts a series of professionally
operated fishing tournaments at which family participation and conservation
of fishery resources are stressed. To date the MWC Conservation Fund,
the only fund of its kind in professional fishing, has contributed more
than $188,000 to fisheries programs in states where MWC tournaments are
held.
