Michigan Walleye Tour Grand River Results
The Grand River at Riverside park hosted the third MWT event of
the season June 27-28. One look at the Grand and it is easy to see
how it got it's name. This vast river system has approximately 40
miles of navigable river. The teams would be fishing from the Sixth Street
Dam in Grand Rapids to Lake Michigan and beyond. The Walleyes in
the Grand are year round residents and actually move up stream towards
Grand Rapids as summer progresses. The teams that would do well here would
also run up river in search of "Ole Marble Eyes" and $8400.00 in cash and
tour points. The trick to running up any river system in the state
involves dodging stumps and sand bars.
Saturday's blast off started out with a bang as a severe thunder
storm rolled in off Lake Michigan and traversed up river. It didn't seem
to bother the the bite upstream a great deal as the team of Mike Victor
and Dennis Glapa weighed in 24.60 pounds including a 8.90 pound beauty
that was also big fish in the two day event winning him $100.00 worth of
Bait Rigs product. Lance Lemmen and Rick Downie netted second place
on day one with 20.80 pounds. Third place on day one went to the
team of Currier - Zalsman with a nice limit weighing 18.80 pounds.
Sunday's weather was a repeat of day one with out the lightning
or hail. Word got out that if teams were going to weigh in anything
they had to run at least 18 miles up river. When the scales were
packed for the day the team Mike Victor and Dennis Glapa took top honors
and the first place check for $3360.00 with a two day weight of 42.85 pounds.
Lance Lemmen and Rick Downie took second place with a two day total of
32.75 pounds and a check for $1680.00. Third place went to the local
team of Currier - Zalsman with 228.55 pounds. The technique that
proved successful was single hook with a small split shot and bead or just
drifting jigs. Fish did't seem to be in the holes but in front of
the holes in four feet of water.
Point leaders heading in to the final tournament of the year
at Linwood is the team of Marple - Jones with 341 points. The Pettengills
have snuck in with 335 points and are currently in second place with Romanack
- Holt taking 334 points into the final qualifier. Several other
teams are in striking range and it should be a great finish! The
final qualifier will be the highlight of Walleye Week at Linwood.
The week starts out with the Linwood Classic on July 11th so there will
be probably be lots of prefish time spent on the bay. The biggest
weights of the year will be expected and it should be a fun week.
Final day for entries for the Linwood Classic will be the morning of the
tournament at 6:00 AM but ONLY up to 20 entries will be taken that morning.
It would be a good idea to get entries in now.
The next stop on the tour is the Hoyles Marina / Saginaw Bay
