Fargo Pro Claims PWT Lead with 30# Catch
Glasgow, MT . .
Tom Backer, Fargo, ND, weighed
the heaviest second day catch of 30.36 pounds and leaped into first place
with 42.30 pounds in the Champion Boats Western Pro-Am. He is fishing Montana’s
Fort Peck Reservoir this week, in his second In-Fisherman Professional
Walleye Trail (PWT) season.
Backer is being closely pursued by 3-time PWT winner Chad Hall, Algona,
Iowa, with 37.81 pounds. Both Backer and Hall are running spinners and
crawlers behind bottom bouncers in less than 14 feet of water. Backer added
a twist to his pattern by pitching #7 and #8
Shad Raps at the shore line. Two of his 6-fish PWT limit came on Shad
Raps.
Holding third with 36.68 pounds is one of the only crankbait trollers,
John Gross, Racine, WI. He’s running Storm Thundersticks
in 8 to 14 feet of water near weeds. The leading amateur after two days
is Dean Miller, Stevens Point, WI, with 50.74 pounds. He was with Backer
on day two and won the Flambeau TS2000 Tackle Storage System for the heaviest
daily weight.
The Bass Pro Shops largest walleye on day two weighed 10.49 pounds
for amateur Arlen Wendt,
Coon Rapids, MN. He won $1,850. Amateur John Janousek, Hutchinson, MN,
landed a 10.16-pounder for $1,200. Pro Backer’s big catch was anchored
with a 10.15 pound walleye. It was worth $825. Pro Mark Martin’s 8.95 pound
walleye paid $750 for fourth. Pros and amateurs have one more day to claim
the $25,000 Pinnacle Rods and Reels Bounty for a walleye breaking the 12.12
pound PWT record.
Chad Hall and amateur
paretner Jon Janousek with a fine 10.16 lb walleye taken on a day when
the walleyes were not hitting for everyone.
Fort Peck walleyes were afflicted with “lockjaw,” as 130 fewer walleyes
were brought to the Fort Peck Marina weigh-in stage and the number of limits
dropped from 53 on day one to 24 today.
The final weigh-in ceremonies begin at 3 p.m. Friday. This will be
the last competition day on the 1998 PWT tour, with the 40 Championship
qualifiers settled by their season-long cumulative weight. The Angler of
the Year pro leader is
Mike Gofron, Antioch, IL. The
Top Amateur is Charlie Christofferson, Park Rapids, MN.

Press Release Day Three
July 24, 1998
For Immediate Release
Minnesota Pro Wins $60,500 as PWT Big Fish Record Falls
Glasgow, MT . .
Pocketing $50,000 for his first In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail
(PWT) victory, pro angler Scott Fairbairn said, “This really feels great!”
Competing on his fourth PWT tour, the Walker, MN fisherman weighed 56.97
pounds over three days of intense tournament action. He also won the coveted
In-Fisherman Angler of the Year title. The PWT big fish record was also
broken.
Fairbairn fished against the best walleye anglers in North America
in the July 22 - 24 Champion Boats Western Pro-Am on Montana’s Fort Peck
Reservoir. Finishing second and collecting $15,000 was pro Tom Backer,
Fargo, ND, with 52.84 pounds.
The third place $10,000 prize went to pro Mike
Gofron, Antioch, IL, with 46.93 pounds. The winning amateur, Dean Miller,
Stevens Point, WI, fished with pros Backer,
Jimmy Klick, White Bear Lake, MN, and Tom Huddleson, Corcoran, MN. Miller
won $12,500, and intends to compete as a PWT pro on the 1999 expanded tour.
Amateurs fish with pros for a combined 6-fish boat weight.
Fairbairn, like most pros ran spinners and crawlers behind bottom bouncers.
He located his fish on rocky points west of the popular fishing area known
as the Pines. He concentrated on running his spinners from 12 feet, up
and over the tops of the points.
Fairbairn, as Angler of the Year, will lead the elite 40-angler field
at the /Dodge
Championship in Bismarck, ND, September 17 - 19. The Angler of the Year
award paid $10,000. The Mariner Top Amateur, Charlie Christofferson, Park
Rapids, MN accumulated the most weight throughout the season and will also
compete at the Championship. He also won $4,000 including a
4-stroke outboard. The
Batteries Pro Rookie of the Year was Dan DeJaeghere, Pierre, SD, winning
$3,000.
Pro John Hook with the new PWT record fish of 12.18
lbs caught while trolling a bottom
bouncer and Astrobrite spinner
Pro John Hook, Oscoda, MI, brought the largest walleye ever to the
PWT scales on the final day. The huge 12.19 pound specimen brought the
Montana crowd to their feet. It exceeded the 1994 PWT record set by Reggie
Thiel, Walker, MN, by 7/100ths of a pound. It was 32 3/4 inches with a
16 inch girth. Hook’s record was worth a $25,000 bounty from Pinnacle Rods
and Reels. No stranger to big walleyes, Hook, a charter captain and guide,
caught the largest Master Angler fish in Michigan three different years.
Hook is also a taxidermist, and will mount the monster, which he caught
on a #6
lime green spinner and crawler. He also won the Bass Pro Shops daily and
overall big fish for $2,350 plus a graphite replica of his trophy.
