In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail Update
News Release for February,
2002
Walleyes may be cold-blooded, but those who chase
them are "hot" in
anticipation of the In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail (PWT) tour.
With a dozen years of tournament history and $12,000,000 in payout,
PWT
executive director Jim Kalkofen said, "More pros applied to fish the
PWT
this season than ever before; it's amazing."
The PWT is an invitation for pro contestants.
First-year rookies
apply to compete, and when the credentials committee approves them,
they are
seeded in the field. The veteran pros are back. Kalkofen
said, "Tournament
anglers have more opportunities to fish competitively every year.
This
experience prepares them for the PWT pro ranks, and when they step
up to the
Big Leagues, they're ready."
Fishing as an amateur at PWT tournaments is another
route to the Big
Leagues of competitive fishing. Amateurs fish each day of the
3-day
tournament as partners with pro anglers. The pros provide the
boat and
tackle (amateurs only bring a lunch), and take amateurs to their number
one
spots. The goal is to catch fish together, because under the
PWT
boat-weight format, walleyes count for both partners. "No other
format is
as much fun with as great a learning potential," Kalkofen said.
The PWT still has amateur openings at all six tournaments.

Lake Erie, Port Clinton, Ohio, April 17-19
Missouri River & Lake Francis Case, Chamberlain,
SD, May 8-10
Leech Lake, Walker, MN, May 22-24
Lake Winnebago, Oshkosh, WI, June 19-21
Devils Lake, ND, July 10-12
Saginaw Bay, AuGres, MI, July 31, Aug. 1-2
Amateurs can fish one or more events. The entry
fee is $575. Many
enter with buddies and travel and stay together to split the cost.
The
winning amateur nets a 17-foot Lund/Mercury walleye boat package valued
at
more than $15,000, part of a $250,000 purse at each tournament
.
