Chamberlain Pro Angler Leads Day 1 of Lund/Miller PWT Tournament
Chamberlain, South Dakota.....Cold front conditions
greeted contestants in
the Lund Boats/Miller Brewing Company Western Pro-Am today. A
full field of
155 In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail pros with their amateur
partners
headed onto the Missouri River this morning under gloomy skies, brisk
breezes (15 to 30 mph from the north), occasional showers and hail.
But, the effort proved rewarding for many, especially
local Chamberlain pro
Scott Handel and amateur Jim Trow, Ames, Iowa, who came to the Cedar
Shore
Marina stage with 12.71 pounds. They weighed a tournament limit
of six
walleyes, and with the state slot limit, only two could be over 18
inches
long. The race is close; 30 anglers are within three pounds of
the lead.
In second is pro Tom Backer, Fargo, North Dakota,
and amateur Kevin Bruer,
Robbinsdale, Minnesota. They weighed 11.95 pounds. Holding
third are pro
Jimmy Bell, Ham Lake, Minnesota, and William Brewer, Omaha, Nebraska
with
11.87 pounds. Half the sets of pro-am partners caught limits.
Of the
walleyes (and some saugers) brought to the stage, 86 percent were
successfully released into the Missouri River.
Most anglers fished from Crow Creek upstream to the
White River downstream.
Common patterns involved live bait on jigs or hooked behind
bottom
bouncers while drifting over the 13 to 15 foot flats. Multiple
drift socks
slowed boats, and accurate presentations produced best. Some
anglers
trolled crankbaits with success, but typical comments echoed similar
sentiments, “The fish changed from yesterday to today.”
The largest fish of the day, a 5.82 pound walleye,
earned Miller High Life
honors for Billings, Montana, pro Mitch Howe. More fish stories
and lively
stage action occurs Thursday and Friday starting at 3 p.m. at Cedar
Shore
Marina in Chamberlain and Oacoma.
This is the first tournament in the Dee Zee western
division, with Leech
Lake in Walker, Minnesota later this month and the July 10-12 event
in
Devils Lake, North Dakota to follow. Amateur slots still exist
in Devils
Lake; to enter, anglers can go to the PWT web site for entry blanks
and
information, www.in-fisherman.com, or call PWT headquarters, 218-829-0620.
The east division includes two more tournaments, Lake Winnebago at
Oshkosh,
Wisconsin, June 19-21, and Saginaw Bay at AuGres, Michigan, July 31
to Aug.
