Fargo Pro Tom Backer Takes PWT
Tournament Lead in South Dakota
Chamberlain, South Dakota....With the Gander Mountain
heavyweight catch of the Lund/Miller Western Pro-Am, Tom Backer,
Fargo, North Dakota, moved into the lead with 25.81 pounds.
His second day catch weighed 13.86 pounds. The 3-day In-Fisherman
Professional Walleye Trail (PWT) format means the full field of 155
pros and amateurs compete for the $250,000 purse one more day, Friday,
May 10.
Backer only had six bites, but converted each one
to the net despite strong
winds of 15 to 35 mph. Waves built to five feet high in areas,
with most
anglers seeking calmer seas in their “secondary” spots. Patience
was the
key for the top anglers, including Kim “Chief” Papineau, Escanaba,
Michigan,
with 23.7 pounds; Gil Mollet, Jefferson, South Dakota, with 23.24 pounds;
Rich Mealey, Westerville, Ohio, 23.19 pounds; and Gary “Mr. Walleye”
Roach,
Merrifield, Minnesota, with 21.42 pounds. Day one leader, Scott
Handel,
Chamberlain, looked at the wind and opted to fish an alternate spot,
but
with four fish, dropped to 29th place.
Amateurs fish three days; each day with a different
pro, for a combined
boat-weight. Amateurs fish for a first-prize of a $15,000 Lund/Mercury
boat
package. The winning pro earns $50,000. The top 45 amateurs and
pros win
cash and/or merchandise. The leading amateur is Steve Anderson,
Lincoln,
Nebraska. He drew Backer today. They also landed the Miller
High Life Big
Fish of the day, a 5.54-pounder, worth at least $1,000. The largest
of the
tournament was caught yesterday by Mitch Howe, Billings, Montana.
It
weighed 5.82 pounds.
One-third of the contestants caught limits both days.
The PWT limit of six
walleyes or saugers, in conformance with state regs, means all fish
must be
from 15 to 18 inches, with two over 18 inches. A total of 1,377
fish came
to the scales through the first two days, and 87 percent were successfully
released.
The final weigh-in occurs at Cedar Shore Marina starting
about 3 p.m.
Friday, and walleye fans are invited to this scenic Chamberlain and
Oacoma
setting. On the final day, pros reveal their favorite tactics,
boat control
methods, hotspots and secrets.
