In-Fisherman PWT 2002 Leech Lake Tournament
Walker Minnesota
Pro
Bob Hanson Takes First Day Leech Lake Honors; Leads PWT
Walker, Minnesota.........Despite
a later (and colder) than usual Minnesota
Spring, the walleyes finally indicated they are willing to cooperate
at the
Lowrance/Mercury Central Pro-Am walleye tournament today in Walker,
Minn.
Fishing legendary Leech Lake, the In-Fisherman Professional Walleye
Trail
(PWT) anglers found success in the warming waters.
With two fishing days remaining, pro Bob Hanson,
Pequot Lakes, Minn. leads
the 159-boat field with 21.17 pounds. He fished with amateur
Bill Schmidt,
Bismarck, ND. Second place pro Gary Parsons, Glidden, Wis.
and amateur
Mike Abrahamson, Brainerd, Minn. weighed 21.03 pounds. Holding
third place
are pro Rick Garnder, Greeley, Colorado and amateur Pete Hein, Princeton,
Minn. with 19.44 pounds.
Anglers found fishing tough during the 5-day practice
period, but as
sunshine had an impact, today’s “bite” improved dramatically.
A total of
77 sets of partners caught PWT 6-fish limits.
The Miller High Life Big Walleye honors went to pro
Sheldon Meidinger,
Bismarck, ND. His walleye weighed 5.70 pounds. If it holds
as the largest
of the tournament, it will pay $3,000. Second and third place
big fish
awards are $1,000 each.
In PWT tournaments, amateurs fish with a different
pro daily, for a chance
to learn fishing secrets, walleye presentation tactics, boat control
methods, get an education in electronics (sonar and GPS), and have
fun
exploring all the flats, points, bays, rock piles, and emerging weedlines
on
Leech Lake, Minnesota’s third largest lake.
Daily weigh-in festivities commence at 3 p.m. Thursday
and Friday at
Walker’s City Park. Many vacationers and tourists visit the Leech
Lake area
over the Memorial Day weekend, and by visiting the PWT weigh-in, they
will
gain valuable information about Leech Lake walleyes. Walleye
jig colors,
depths to fish, speed and spots to fish will be shared on stage Friday.
Following the Lowrance/Mercury Central Pro-Am, the
PWT goes to Lake
Winnebago in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Then, the tour heads west to
Devils Lake,
one of the amazing stories in the fishing world: more water and
more fish.
That event, July 10-12, still has amateur openings. To enter,
call PWT at
218-829-0620, or check the web site at www.in-fisherman.com.
This site also
carries daily results as they occur; go to the Mercury Real Time Scoreboard
