In-Fisherman PWT 2002 Leech Lake Tournament
Walker Minnesota
Walleye
Pro Paul Meleen Jumps from
28th to 1st; Takes PWT Tournament Lead
Walker, Minnesota.....The Leech
Lake walleyes kicked into high gear
Wednesday, and despite a serious cold front today, In-Fisherman Professional
Walleye Trail (PWT) anglers continued to catch fish.
The 159 pros paired with 159 amateur partners and
after two days of the
Lowrance/Mercury Central Pro-Am on Minnesota’s third largest lake,
pro Paul
Meleen, Onamia, Minn. leads with 37.40 pounds. He weighed
22.22 pounds
today. Pros fish with different amateurs daily, and after Friday’s
competition, a total of $250,000 will be awarded at the Walker City
Park.
In second is pro Reggie Thiel, Walker, with 36.18 pounds. And,
12.96 pounds
was enough to keep day one leader Bob Hanson, Pequot Lakes, Minn. in
third
place. The pro winner nets $53,000.
Morning winds started southwesterly at about 15 mph,
and by noon were
northwest at 25 mph. In addition to waves to four feet, temperatures
dropped at least 10 degrees during the day. Forecasts call for
temperatures
in the mid-20 degree range Friday morning. Most anglers are Lindy
or Roach
rigging with minnows, although some top anglers have found success
with
crawlers and leeches. Jigging and bottom-bouncing are also producing.
Most
anglers are fishing areas where emerging weeds are finally poking above
the
lake bottom.
Leading the amateur race is Bill Schmidt, Bismarck,
ND. The top amateur
wins a Lund/Mercury 17-foot boat package on an Eagle trailer.
The top 40
pros and 40 amateurs win cash and/or merchandise. Amateurs spots
are still
available in the final two events of the year; July 10-12 on Devils
Lake in
North Dakota, and July 31 and Aug. 1-2 on Michigan’s Saginaw Bay.
For
information, call PWT headquarters at 218-829-0620, or check the PWT
web
site, www.in-fisherman.com.
The Miller High Life Big Walleye honors went to amateur
James Rusten,
Cavalier, ND, fishing with rookie pro Brett Wilkens, Kiel, Wis.
If his
6.31-pounder is the largest of the tournament, it will pay $3,000.
Second
and third largest fish are worth $1,000 each.
Most walleyes have been released, including 663 of
722 on day one and 643
of 715 today, for a successful release rate of 91 percent. The
few fish
iced will be donated to the Walker chapter of Habitat for Humanity,
whose
members worked behind the scenes for a very smooth weigh-in.
