Michigan Anglers Hold PWT Saginaw
Bay Tournament Top Spots after Day One
AuGres, Michigan.....Saginaw Bay walleyes played
hide and seek on day one
of the Lund/PowerBait Northeastern Pro-Am. Under clear skies
and relatively
calm winds, the In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail (PWT) contestants
checked every section of the expansive Bay.
For some, like pro Steve Bohn, Fairgrove, Michigan,
the walleyes were very
cooperative. With amateur Chuck Harmston, Andover, Minnesota,
they landed a
tournament limit of five walleyes that weighed 32.27 pounds.
In second are
pro Greg Yarbrough, White Lake, Michigan, and amateur Frank Knuth,
Linden
Hurst, Illinois, with 32.22 pounds.
Pros and amateurs fish together as partners in every
aspect of fishing.
Amateurs learn about boat control, fishing tactics (mostly Saginaw
Bay
crankbait and spinner trolling) and electronics. The weight they
catch
counts for both, and the pros fish against pros; amateurs against other
amateurs.
The goal of each angler is to cash a check, and those
checks will total
approximately $250,000. The top 40 in each division win cash
and/or
merchandise for their three day cumulative weights. The top pro
wins a Lund
20-foot boat with a Mercury 200-horsepower outboard on an Eagle trailer,
and
cash for a $53,000 prize. The winning amateur tows home a 17-foot
Lund/Mercury walleye boat, valued at $15,000.
The Miller Big Fish of the day weighed 9.11 pounds,
and was caught by pro
Rocco Papandrea, Plainwell, Michigan. It was worth $1,000, which
he will
split with amateur partner Francis Semenick, Tawas City, Michigan.
Big fish
pay $5,000 per tournament.
The Lund/PowerBait Northeastern Pro-Am is the final
tournament of the PWT
season, and many races are up for grabs. Leading the Dee Zee
Eastern
Division is Nate Provost, Gulliver, Michigan. The top 10 qualify
for the
prestigious Mercury Championship this September in Bismarck, North
Dakota.
The other group fighting for positions in the Championship includes
pros
fishing all six qualifiers. The top 30 will make it. They
are led by
Miller/In-Fisherman Angler of the Year leader, pro John Kolinski, Menasha,
Wisconsin.
The top pro in the eastern division wins a Yamaha
ATV Big Bear worth
$5,200, and the Miller/In-Fisherman Angler collects $25,000 cash.
Second and third day weigh-in festivities take place
at Northport Marina,
just east of AuGres on Highway 23, starting about 3 p.m. They
are free and
walleye fans are encouraged to attend. Mercury Real-Time Scores are
posted
immediately on the PWT website, www.professionalwalleyetrail.com
