Press Release Day 1
PWT Pros Finally Find
Detroit River Wa l l e y e s
Trenton, MI . . Following four days of muddy water, the Detroit River finally
began to clear and thechange produced exciting results for the In-Fisherman
Professional Walleye Trail anglers. The leader in theBass Pro Shops Eastern
Pro-Am is local pro angler Andy Kuffer, Fair Haven, MI, with 26.98 pounds.
He livesabout 45 miles north of the tournament site at Lake Erie MetroPark
where the Detroit River flows into LakeErie.
Daryl Christensen, Montello, WI, the 1998 PWT Walleye Super Pro winner
is in second place with 24.61 pounds. The third place pro is 1997 PWT Angler
of the Year
Chris Gilman, Chisago City, MN, with
24.16 pounds.
The river “muddied” after last week’s northeast winds roiled Lake St.
Clair. The mud flowed
downstream and slowed what had been a “hot bite.” As the water cleared
Tuesday night, many anglers foundthe fish extremely active this morning.
A total of 68 five-fish limits were weighed of the 119 pro-ampartnerships.Amateurs
fish each day with a different pro partner, and the leading amateur is
Mike DaValle,Wauconda, IL. In second is Tobby Miller, New Hudson, MI, and
the third place amateur is Bob Guzik, SouthLyon, MI. The three leaders
all fished different methods. Kuffer trolled 3-ounce sinkers with floating ;
Christensen vertical jigged and Gilman hand-lined, the popular local tactic.
Hand-lining played an important role for many top-placing anglers. With
a 1 1/4 pound lead weight on wire, connected to a spring-loaded reel,
they feel bottom and the floating Rapalas, ThunderSticks and Rogues
on 5 to 40 foot leaders run tight tobottom. The final two days, Thursday
and Friday, feature weigh-in festivities at 3 p.m. at Lake Erie MetroPark.
Tournament journal
day 1Randy
Tyler Day One proved to be an interesting day. My tournament
partner Will Lage of Rapid city south Dakota and I were out in the first
filight due back at 3:15 p.m. We headed out in his Yarcraft boat to the
Trenton Stacks area on the south east portion of the Detroit River.
As we pulled in Will fired up the kicker motor as we both prepared our
rigs. We started off with Daiwa Line counter reels model 27slc mounted
to Walleye Angler bottom bouncing 7 foot rods, heavy action the reels were
spooled with Berkley Fireline 50 lb test. Attatched at the end of
the line was a 3' wire leader with 8 clevises mounted approcimately 4"
apart.. To the bottom swivel clevise we attatched an 1# pencil weight
to handle the stiff current. Two clevises up we rigged a snap swivel
attatched to a 20', 20# test line leader and then another snap attatched
to a #9 floating fire tiger Rapala. Two clevises up from that we
attatched a snap swivel then a 40', 20# test line leader and a #7 floating
gold and black Rapala. We had to then while the boat was moving ever
so slightly in the current let out first the forty foot lead by hand, then
the 20' lead by hand and then slowly lower the 1# pencil weight, this is
similar way to recreate what a lot of the locals do fishing in this current
a technique known as handlining which will be discussed later in this article
and in a furture article on Walleyes Inc. Using this techinique we
were able to boat over twenty walleyes for the day and weight in a bag
limit of five totaling 15.09 lbs. Using this method makes it difficult
to net fish as when you have a fish on you may only reel up to about six
inches prior to the steel leader and then you first have to determine which
line the fish is on and then slowly handline the fish in so it may
be netted. Just another fine learning expierience that comes
from fishing the tournament trail, and a technique that works great in
high current conditions.

Big Detroit River Wa l l e y e s
Trenton, MI . . Big catches were the rule on day two of the Bass Pro Shops

Tournament journal
day 2Randy
Tyler Day 2. Brought completely different fishing conditions.
The wind had picked up to about 20 m.p.h out of the southwest but the water
had remained fairly clear. Greg Englehart out of Marion Indiana a
second year touring pro was my partner for the day. We headed out
in the early morning toward the Trenton channel but the northeast portion
of the stacks area. We tried bottom bouncing the areas with an assorted
number of small Rapalas but to no avail. At 12:00 we decided to try
a few spots upriver. As we made the 45 minute run upriver we knew
our hopes were fading.. We proceeded to fish just below the opening
of the St Claire Lake with a rig simialr to the Mark Martin Dubuque Rig
when I popped a small eye. to bad only 14' long. We tried for
another hour but having no luck and time running out we ran back downriver
to try again. 3:00 p.m. and no fish in the boat with only an hour
left Greg noticed a local lose a 3# fish at the boat while jigging, we
immediately switched over to a jig an minnow combination and started drifting
the channel between 12 and 20' deep, pow I nail a 17"er the first keeeper
of the day. I was able to nail two more fish while Greg boated another
one but we had to go in with four smal fish weighting only 6.03 lbs for
the day. Sometimes tournament are won and lost just on the little
things if we had switched earlier in the day to jigs and stayed put
we would of had a better catch.

Release Day Three
PWT News Release April 16, 1999
Illinois Walleye Pro Wi n s
First PWT Event and $51,350
Trenton,
MI . . A spring cold front spit rain and blew 25 mph southwest winds up
the Detroit River forthe In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail anglers
on Friday. The final day catch was much lower than the first two days of
the Bass Pro Shops Eastern Pro-Am, but pro
John Campbell West Dundee Illinois persevered with a total weight of
73.83 pounds. Campbell caught 24.61 pounds on the final day, with 5/8 ounce
chartreuse and orange
Fuzz-E-Grubs. He vertical jigged the salt mine area downstream of the Ambassador
Bridge. Depths of 29 feet proved best. He won $51,350 including a
19-foot Fishunterboat and a 200-hp Mercury. Previously, he scored eight
top 25 PWT finishes in five seasons.Pro Bill St. Peter, Bay City, MI earned
second place, $15,000, for 73.14 pounds. The third place pro, arookie competing
in his first PWT event, Greg Yarbrough, Trenton, MI, won $10,000 for 68.29
pounds.Amateur Tim Singleton, Ann Arbor, MI, collected $12,500 for his
first-place finish. In the PWT Pro-Am format, Singleton fished with pros
Dwaine White, John Hook and Tommy
Skarlis during the tournament. The $25,000
Bounty for a new PWT big walleye record remained “on the table,” but many
large fish were caught. On day three, amateur Dan Lewis, Gaylord, MI, landed
a 9.77-pounder for $1,800.Rookie pro Dennis Lantzy, Warren, MI, won $1,100
for a 9.68-pounder. Pro Gary Parsons netted $925 for a8.86-pounder and
pro Campbell received $850 for a 8.79 pound walleye. All awards were courtesy
of BassPro Shops, opening a new store in the Detroit area at Auburn Hills
in May. The largest walleye of the week,10.49 pounds was worth $2,300 to
amateur Blaine Hornes, Neenah, WI. Two special awards honored the
assistance of local volunteers. Writer and guide Mike Zielinski,Gibralter,
MI, who introduced PWT officials to the Trenton Walleye Committee and assisted
with the mediacontingent won the PWT “Key Award.” Lake Erie MetroPark superintendent
Nancy Schaible, Trenton, provided an ideal site for the weigh-in and received
the PWT “Host” award. The MetroPark located where theDetroit River flows
into Lake Erie is home to hundreds of acres of marshes, hiking and picnic
areas, a superblaunch and a fine museum. The Coleman Cool Under Pressure
award for advancing the most places was worth $1,000 to pro SteveGrams,
Marshall, WI. He advanced 66 places. Amateur Hans Klay, Windsor, Ontario,
advanced 73 places for$600 of PWT merchandise. The T-H Marine Live Release
$500 award went to pro Campbell for releasing themost walleyes. Pro and
amateur contestants Kim Papineau, Escanaba, MI and George Barach, Barryton,
MI,earned $500 and $300 of merchandise respectively, for
Heavyweight awards, the heaviest one daycatch, 36.35 pounds for a PWT 5-fish
limit. Pro St. Peter received the $500
Power Bait award forplacing highest while using Power Bait. He used Powerbait
brown jigworms on
Fireball jigs. Many anglers preferred jigs and plastic.Despite inclement
weather on the final day, hundreds of walleye fans cheered the winners.
Tournament
operations were praised by competitors due to the participation of
the Downriver Walleye Association and the Saginaw Bay Walleye Club. They
assisted in the successful release of 1,210 of the 1,346 walleyes weighed. The
average weight was 3.29 pounds. The PWT tour stops next at Lake Oahe, Mobridge,
SD, May 5 - 7.
John
Campbell hoists two of the fine walleyes that helped him net the PWT Detroit
opener and brought him a well earned $50,000 prize
Tournament
Journal Day Three
Day three. As dawn breaks we find that weather conditions have
changed radically. The wind is gusting out of the southeast at 30
to 35 M.P.H. Temperature around 38 to 40 degrees it is overcast and raining
off and on. I have decided to wear my snowsuit instead of my rain suit
because of the extreme cold, mistake # 1 My third day partner Andy
Kuffer of Fair Haven Michigan is in second place going out and has been
on fish all week. The plan is to jig an area near the salt mines
in 25 to 30’ deep of water with a silver-plated
Jig with the new iridescent eyes. (Note when using this jig be sure
to sharpen the hooks right out of the package as these are plated and the
plating gets on the hooks and leaves them dull. We start are run
a 7:00 a.m. and get up on plane and are running about 45 m.p.h. when we
start hitting some rough water, as we dive into a big boat wake the nose
goes down and a huge wave comes over the bow of the
2025, I look up and see it come over the windshields and into our laps.
Immediately there is a foot and a half of water in the back of the boat.
Andy keeps us up on plane, the bilge goes on and slowly the water leaves
the boat. But we are both completely wet and the cold is starting
to set in. With still a fifteen mile run ahead of us we find that
the fasteners for the windshields are bot broke and we are going to have
to hold on to the windshields whenever we are under way. We get to
our first spot and with the wind it is impossible to control the boat and
jig. We bail out and go to an area a little more suitable for jigging
and boat control. The water has muddied up considerably since the
day before and in two hours we are unable to boat a keeper fish.
As the PWT camera boat keeps checking on us to see if we are to still remain
in contention. Noting that both of us at this time are unable to move or
jig properly due to our hands being so cold. We then wisely decide to go
to handling. With # 9 Firetiger Rapalas. Andy gets into a FINE 6#
almost immediately. Great one in the boat but the waves just keep
getting bigger and bigger and now intermittently we are getting a sleet
mixture from the sky. I have a small one on but Andy is unable to
net it before it pops off. . Then I am able to boat an 18”
and an hour later another 19”. Then the bite just quits. We
try two other areas but to no avail. We weight 12.06 lbs. for the
day, which is enough to keep Andy in the money and really only one fish
out of first place. Andy taught me some excellent boat control methods
on this day for jigging and also handlining techniques of which I will
have an article on a later date
