Sime &
Gaston Capture Cabela's MWC Trilene - Ranger Boats
Walleye Tourney Title
Onamia, MN - David Sime and Alan Gaston of Eagan, Minnesota won the
Cabela's
Masters Walleye Circuit (MWC) Trilene - Ranger Boats team walleye tournament
held May 18 & 19 on Mille Lacs Lake at Onamia, Minnesota.
The Ranger Boats sponsored team weighed eight fish
totaling 14.79
lbs. They collected $25,000 for the win plus an additional $500 from
Ranger
for their first place finish. It was the first circuit victory
for the team
who began their professional fishing career in 1992.
Sime and Gaston pre-fished for a week prior to the
tournament
stating that they eliminated the entire southern half of the lake by
doing
so, deciding to concentrate their tournament efforts on the northern
section. The game plan resulted in the win.
"We fished leeches over the gravel between 16 and 20 feet. The rigs
were #5
Colorado hammered copper blades tied to 6/2 FireLine with 10-foot leaders
of
green 6-pound Trilene XT," shared Sime. "We also used red #4 hooks,
which
were a key to our presentation."
Gaston added, "We just drifted, working fish which
were spread over
a 100 yard circle. The water temperature was about 44 degrees.
I thought
we'd finish in the top ten and we wind up winning. I'm numb!"
Second place finishers were Bruce Hill (Forest Lake,
MN) and Gary
Houdek (Charles City, IA). They weighed 14.11 lbs, earning $12,500.
Third place worth $9,000 went to Chad Christianson
(Coon Rapids, MN)
and Ben Munsch (Hugo, MN) with seven fish weighing 13.05 lbs.
The top 35 teams shared the $101,875 cash purse.
An additional
$4,750 was paid in big fish prizes.
The tournament ran in conjunction with the Cabela's
National Team
Championship. Nearly 400 teams from 25 states fished the combined
event
making it the largest pro-walleye tournament ever held. $144,000
in cash
plus additional prizes were paid out to the Championship field.
The next MWC tournament will be held on the Bays
de Noc, August 24 &
25 at Gladstone/Escanaba, Michigan. Openings still exist.
