Iowa Teams Dominate Motorguide-MWC Tournament in Dubuque
Dubuque, IA - One of the toughest bites of the year helped keep the
competition at bay, while consistent two day catches sent Art Lehrman
(Dubuque, IA) and Dale Kruger (Cassville, WI) to the winner's circle
of the
Motorguide - Masters Walleye Circuit Tournament. Lehrman and Kruger
took
home a check for $ 7, 000.00.
The catch and release tournament was held on the Mississippi River in
pools
11, 12 and 13.
Lehrman and Kruger were in fifth place on Saturday weighing just two
walleyes at 6.63 pounds. Sunday's cool weather and all day rain seemed
to
help improve the fishing with Lehrman and Kruger weighing more than
twice
their weight from Saturday. Their total of 21.03 pounds was enough
to win.
Second place was taken by the team of Maury Schmerbach (Dubuque, IA)
and
Mike Glynn (Dubuque, IA) with a total of 16.43 pounds. Just four tenths
of a
pound behind, was the team of Les Roemig (Amana, IA) and Dave Daugherity
(Manville, IA) with 16.06 pounds.
The Masters Walleye Circuit requires a 15 inch minimum for any fish
weighed.
Out of a total of 68 teams, only 29 teams were able to catch and weigh
and
eligible fish.
The Iowa DNR used the tournament as an occasion to further support their
stocking efforts by checking all the fish for tags or markings.
The Mississippi Walleye Club received a special conservation check for
$ 680
from Wildlife Forever. The money will be used to support their annual
kids
day fishing tournament that helps teach kids the sport of fishing and
the
importance of aquatic conservation.
The Dubuque Tournament was the sixth stop of the 2001 season. The seventh
and final tournament will be the Ranger Boats-MWC Tournament being
held on
Lake Pepin in Minnesota on September 22 & 23.
