Perry Good Nets PWT Win # 4 Adds $64,000 to
Bank Account
Bay City, Wisconsin....Perry Good made In-Fisherman
Professional Walleye
Trail (PWT) win number four look easy. He fished against the
world¹s best
pro walleye anglers on the Mississippi River and Lake Pepin to record
his
fourth tour victory.
The Trilene/Mercury Central Pro-Am, with headquarters
in Bay City, Wis.,
saw Good take a commanding lead on day two with the Gander Mountain
Heavyweight catch, 34.57 pounds. He added another 16 pounds on
the final
day for a $64,000 win. His prize package included a Lund/Mercury
walleye
boat. His total weight of 70.23 pounds was 15 better than second
place pro
Bill Ortiz, Dodgeville, Wis. who won $20,000. Third paid $13,000
to pro
Todd Riley, Amery, Wis. with 54.22 pounds. Riley took over the
Angler of
the Year points standings.
Fourth and fifth place pros won $11,000 and $10,000
respectively for
Brad Davis, Jackson, Wis. and Scott Fairbairn, Hager City, Wis.
The top
amateur, Luke Stout, Ashland, Wis., trailered home a new 17-foot Lund
boat
powered with a Mercury outboard on an Eagle trailer, valued at $15,000.
The
top 40 pros and amateurs won cash and/or merchandise prizes totaling
approximately $300,000.
Good¹s technique proved that walleye anglers
fish where the fish live
and eat. He Lindy-rigged No-Snagg sinkers with a two-foot leader
and
leeches over a rock hump that was from two to three feet underwater.
He
only traveled about two miles from the Bay City Park PWT headquarters
for
his fish. The rock hump was about 40 yards across, and he moved
along the
edges and over the top. This win gives Good 22 top 10-place finishes
and
total PWT earnings of $322,000. He is one of only two anglers
to have
fished every PWT Championship, and this win automatically qualifies
him for
the 2003 Mercury Championship in Houghton, Mich.
Many anglers trolled crankbaits over the flats, where
they targeted
suspended walleyes. Others ran leadcore with cranks to force-feed
walleyes
on the bottom. Parsons was one of the few jiggers. He ran
a steep break
from 12 to 35 feet, hovering over the edge with his MinnKota bow mount
trolling motor. He swept and dropped 1/2 ounce jigs with shiners
in a
³jig-trolling tactic.² His partner ran 3-way
rigs baited with willow cat
minnows.
Every PWT tournament teaches new tactics and reminds
walleye fans about
some favorites they may have neglected. A big crowd greeted anglers
as they
crossed the colorful PWT stage during the weigh-in ceremonies.
Special awards went to Good ($500) for the Gander
Mountain Heavyweight
award and his amateur partner Luke Stout, who won $300. Good
and Stout also
split $1,000 for their day two big fish, 8.18 pounds. Parsons
and day one
amateur Dave Klamfoth, Waverly, Iowa, also split the big fish $1,000
honors.
On the final day, pro Kim Papineau, Escanaba, Mich. and amateur Tom
Stuart,
Dallas, Wis. split the Miller High Life big fish of the tournament
award,
$3,000, for their 9.16-pounder. Pro Jon Thelen, Crystal,
Minn., won the
$1,000 Coleman Cool Under Pressure award for advancing 84 places.
Amateur
winner Stout won $600 for advancing 78 places.
The top Dee Zee West Division pro is Ross Grothe,
Northfield, Minn. The
races in the divisions and among the 6-time touring pro anglers are
very
close, as the PWT packs up and heads to the eastern basin of Lake Erie
for a
date with monster walleyes July 9-11, in Dunkirk, NY, where openings
still
remain for amateurs. To enter, call PWT at 218-829-0620, or go
to the PWT
web site at www.professionalwalleyetrail.com. The site also posts
pro and
amateur scores as soon as the anglers cross the stage. Go to
the site, then
click on the Mercury Real-Time scoreboard. Stories and photos
are also
posted.
The Bay City tournament will be aired on TNN Aug.
3 at 8:30 a.m., with
previews and reviews also on TNN July 27 and Aug. 10. This TV
show, news on
In-Fisherman radio and in the Walleye In-Sider magazine and throughout
the
walleye world draws attention to Bay City, pool # 4 of the Mississippi
River, and the great fishery resources found in this mighty river system.
A
special PWT Key Award went to Bay City village clerk Kay Beder for
chairing
the local tournament committee.
