NATIONAL FISHING WEEK OFFERS ENDLESS YOUTH FISHING OPPORTUNITIES
KETCHUM, OK – As summer begins and kids are looking for activities,
why not
have fun in the sun during National Fishing Week June 2-10, 2001. It’s
a
great time to take a youngster fishing. The summer temperatures are
not yet
in full force and gas prices are up, making a long distance vacation
expensive. It’s a great time for a short family fishing trip
to a nearby
lake, stream or ocean.
Hooked On Fishing International and its Kids All-American Fishing Derby
program want to offer some suggestions that will encourage youngsters
and
their families to fish and spend quality time together.
Take adequate safety precautions, including life vests, sunscreen and
bug
repellent. Also, take plenty of snacks and cool drinks on your trip.
Keep the beginning fishing trips short, no more than half a day. Plan
a
morning trip while it’s still cool.
Be patient with your young angler. Keep everything simple and be prepared
to be a good teacher and listener.
"It doesn’t matter if you catch any fish in the beginning," says Gordon
Holland, founder of Hooked On Fishing International, "as long as you
have a
good time together."
The Kids All-American Fishing Derby events will take place at more than
700
locations in all 50 states, and most of the events are scheduled during
National Fishing Week. The derbies are organized locally by parks and
recreation departments, service organizations, and community agencies.
The
fishing derbies provide an excellent opportunity for youth to show-off
their fishing talent while practicing one of the oldest outdoor
recreational activities.
The kids’ fishing derbies are nationally sponsored by Berkley PowerBait,
Dubble Bubble Bubble Gum, Eagle Claw, FishingWorld.com, Frito-Lay,
Fujifilm U.S.A., G3 Boats, Jadico (Laker), Pepsi, Southwest Airlines, Berkley
Trilene, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., Water Gremlin and Zebco.
For more information on National Fishing Week and the Kids All-American
Fishing Derby, young anglers and parents alike are invited to visit

and parents, as well as information about fishing derbies in your area.
Fishing is truly a sport that can bond – give it a try!
