PRESS RELEASE
Walker, Minn—As one of the largest team walleye fishing events in the country, the 2003 Evinrude Walleye Classic has drawn plenty of attention to Leech Lake in central Minnesota, and apparently the focus is not going to cease as Fox Sports will air the event on television in July. Over 200 teams competed in the 2003 tournament held May 31-June 1st on Leech Lake as the prize package topped $90,000.00 for fish caught, and some not. This tournament’s unique prize structure is one of the reasons the Evinrude Walleye Classic is so popular for participants and spectators alike. The tournament allows teams of anglers to compete in separate divisions while competing for the overall championship. Divisions such as the Fenwick Male/Female division, Abu Garcia All Female division, Berkley Adult Youth division names a few. However, there are also prizes and awards that may not be so coveted - yet willingly accepted like the Northern Lights Casino “Mediocre” Award for 120th place, or the Lowrance “You Need Direction” Award for finishing 200th place overall. The event keeps everyone on their toes as well with a special award for the angler wearing Irish Setter shoes. This tournament is a truly special and unique fishing tournament with lots of prizes available to all who participate. Topping the prize list for 2003 were Dave Anderson (Apple Valley, MN) and Ron Shatek (Lakeville, MN). These two anglers put 11 fish in the boat over the two days and enough weight to be the 2003 Champions. The team not only captured first place they also took top honors in the Mitchell Veteran Angler division as well. Combined with the 4 Stroke Johnson Outboard 1st place kicker, they left Walker, Minnesota with over $20,000 in cash and prizes and an armful of plaques. To see all the fish catching action including
a 9.48 lb walleye caught by Diane Maas tune into Fox Sports on July 26th
at 9:30 am. Or check your local listings, as the show will air on
Midwest Outdoors TV on various stations that same weekend of July 26-27,
2003. The National TV airing will occur three weeks later on the Outdoor
Channel. Check your TV Guide for airtimes or log onto www.walleyeclassic.com
