Illinois Governors Cup October 27,28, 2001 Press Release 10/29/01 Teams from Iowa, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Illinois converged on the City of Ottawa for the first annual Governors Cup Walleye Tournament. River conditions created a real challenge for the fisherman with high muddy water. Pre fishing was almost eliminated on Thursday and Friday with gale forces winds creating 4 to 5 foot rollers on some sections of the Illinois River. Even under these adverse conditions the fisherman were able to catch fish in the Ottawa and Starved Rock pools. Winners of this years event goes to Dominic (Big Knob) Culjan from Utica, IL. and Jim Culjan, Princeton, IL. With a 2 day combined weight of 12# 2ozs earning them $4,000.00 and a $1,000.00 certificate from Ranger Boats. Second place honors went to the team of Don Kenik, Antioch, IL. and Frank Herrmann, Palatine, IL. with 11# 4.5ozs.for $2,000.00. They also captured big fish honors on Saturday with a 3# 11oz. Sauger for $410.00 Third place went to the team of Steve Lotz, Lena, IL. and David Daughendaugh, McConnell, IL. With 10# 12oz. Earning them a check for $1,400.00. Big fish honors for Sunday along with the biggest fish of the tournament went to Geon Altirery from Wilmington, IL. and Jim Viverito, from Chicago, IL. with a 3#15.5 oz Walleye paying $410.00 cash along with a Brackpro kicker mount worth $165.00. Over $11,500.00 in Cash and Awards were presented on Sunday at Allen Park in Ottawa to the 45 team field. Even with tough river conditions the field managed to catch eight five fish limits with 80 fish coming to the scales weighing 139 pounds. Most of the fish were coming from the mouths or creeks where cleaner water was running into the river on jigs and minnows. The tournament was sponsored Ranger Boats, Bracket-Pro, Slinger, Wisconsin, Erhardt Fish-in Sticks, Hopedale, IL, Mepp Mister Twister, and the Ottawa Special events and Division of Tourism.
