Saginaw Bay Up Next for Michigan Region
By Steve Weisman
Gander Mountain GNWC Publicity Director
Michigan teams are preparing for the fourth and
final tournament on the
Michigan Region of the Gander Mountain Grand National Walleye Cup (GNWC),
and what better place to have it than Saginaw Bay!
Scheduled for Sunday, July 25, the Saginaw Bay tournament
is very
important for teams fighting for the Team of the Year honors and also
for a
berth at the Michigan State Championships on August 28-9 at Leelanau,
MI.
"Saginaw Bay is the perfect place to have the final
tournament on the
Michigan Region," said Gander Mountain GNWC Executive Director Bernie
Barringer. "It's a great fishery, and I'm excited to see what the teams
will
bring to the scales."
Openings still exist for the Saginaw Bay qualifier
and Barringer
encourages interested anglers to contact him at 1-800-890-FISH (3474),
or
email the GNWC at info@walleyecup.com.
The tournament director will have the trailer at
the Northport Marina
from 6-8 p.m. the evening before the tournament to take late entries
and
answer questions. Host bait shop is the Northport General Store. According
to reports from the bait shop, walleye fishing continues to be good
with
lots of fish over 22" and walleyes in excess of 30" are being caught.
Gary Bowman, Gander Mountain GNWC Site director
for the Michigan Region,
anticipates good numbers of teams at Saginaw Bay. "I am expecting as
many as
50 teams, and I think we will really have a good bite. Typically, by
the end
of July, the big fish start showing up in the bay. If the weather holds,
it
wouldn't surprise me to see it take 35 pounds to win the tournament."
Teams are to meet at the Northport Marina between
6-6:30 the morning of
the tournament for registration and mandatory boat check.
Take-off is at 7 a.m. with the weigh-in commencing
at 3 p.m. sharp at
Northport Marina. "I have the same thoughts that Gary does. I think
we will
see some great weights come to the scales. I know that the crowd will
enjoy
seeing the baskets of fish that these teams bring in. Plus, they will
also
get to hear and see what worked during the tournament," added Barringer.
Anglers interested in checking out the standings,
reading the releases
about any of the eight regions or simply learning more about the circuit
can
