April 17-19 1998
Walleye Pros Start to Unlock Stockton Secrets

Stockton, Missouri . . . On the heels of a severe cold front, which included a tornado, the
top walleye pro anglers managed to scratch some Lake Stockton walleyes. The 44
In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail top money winners slugged it out under mile-high
skies during the first-ever PWT tournament in Missouri.

Leading the /TEAM DEE ZEE Walleye Super Pro are pro Mark Brumbaugh,Pitsburg, Ohio and his amateur partner Sheldon Meidinger, Bismarck, ND. They weighed three walleyes for 7.38 pounds. Marty Glorvigen, pro from Grand Rapids, MN, and his
amateur partner John Pratt, Roberts, MT, weighed 6.60 pounds for second place.

Pros Dan Plautz, Muskego, WI, and Chris Gilman, Chisago City, MN, were third and fourth with 6.53 and 6.50 pounds. A total of 14 pro/am partners weighed walleyes. Pro Dale Dykes, Leon, Iowa, won the Walleye Angler $1,000 first place award with a 4.29 pound walleye. Glorvigen scored $600 for his 3.62 pounder, while Ron Anlauf, Braham, MN, won $565 for a 3.49 pound walleye. Amateur Meidinger won a Flambeau TS2000 tackle system for the heaviest daily weight by an amateur.

The Walleye Super Pro pays a $50,000 prize to the winning pro and a $9,000 prize to the
top amateur following the 3-day tournament. Anglers depart and return to Orleans Trail
Marina two miles south of Stockton, MO. The weigh-in begins at 3:30 p.m. Saturday and
Sunday, with the $180,000 awards ceremony immediately after Sunday’s weigh-in.

Canadian Pro 'Limits' to Lead Walleye Super Pro

     Stockton, Missouri . . . In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail /TEAM DEE ZEE
Walleye Super Pro Lake Stockton, Stockton, Missouri . . . Under summer-like skies,
In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail anglers found walleyes on Missouri's Lake
Stockton. Leading the second-day charge were pro Greg Horoky, Harrow, Ontario, and
amateur Chuck Tipton, Jr, Box Elder, SD, who weighed 13.99 pounds.

Their tournament limit of five walleyes put Horoky atop the leader board in the Dee
Zee/Walleye Angler Walleye Super Pro. Horoky regrouped after blanking on day one. He
leads pro Mark Brumbaugh, Pitsburg, Ohio, by less than a pound. Brumbaugh has 13.40
pounds. Pro Daryl Christensen weighed four walleyes for 8.50 pounds and jumped into
     third place.

The leading amateur going into the third and final day is Rich Crannick, Overland Park,
Kansas, who has fished with Christensen (today) and Dan Plautz, Muskego, WI, on day
one with a total of 15.03 pounds. The amateur first place prize is $9,000, while the pro
winner will collect $50,000 of a total $180,000 purse. Anglers weighed 23 walleyes on day
one and 37 on day two, largely due to steady weather patterns after a severe mid-week
cold front. All but two were released back into Lake Stockton by the state "release" boat.

Many anglers caught numerous "short" walleyes as they're called when they measure less
than the Stockton 18-inch minimum. Two strong fingerling stockings in 1993 and 1994
make up most of the walleye population. The Missouri Department of Conservation is
proud of their efforts, and plans to stock 622,000 fingerlings later this year and every other
     year for the forseeable future.

Lake Stockton, located 45 minutes north of Springfield, rambles over 25,000 acres of
scenic undeveloped countryside. The final day weigh-in begins at 3:30 p.m. at Orleans Trail
Marina Sunday. The awards ceremony follows when pros will reveal their secret tactics and
     share their walleye lessons.

    Day Three Final Results

                      Wisconsin Pro Scores $51,500

Brainerd, MN. . . Pro angler Daryl Christensen claimed his first In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail  tournament and $51,500 on Lake Stockton. His win came after fishing every PWT
    qualifier since 1990

Christensen, Montello, WI, is a full-time pro-fisherman, and jumped from third to first with a final day limit of 14.07 pounds. His total 3-day catch of nine walleyes weighed 22.57 pounds at the
Dee Zee/Walleye  Angler Walleye Super Pro in Missouri.

The winning amateur, Rich Crannick, Overland Park, Kansas, fished with pros Mike
McClelland  (day3), Christensen (day 2) and Dan Plautz (day 1), and totaled 28.93 pounds for his $9,000 first prize. In  pro-am format, amateurs fish with and use the pro’s gear. They tally their fish for a combined boat  weight each day.

The second place pro with 19.54 pounds was Norb Wallock, Conover, WI. He won $17,000. In third was pro Rick Olson, Mina, SD. He weighed 19.21 pounds and won $12,000. Both are
    full-time touring pro's.

The Lake Stockton 18-inch minimum length limited the number of fish that crossedthe stage, because many walleyes just under the limit were caught. The third day of stable weather contributed to an aggressive  l day “bite.” Also, the pros started to pattern the walleyes.

The top three anglers were pitching jigs shallow. On the third day Wallock dropped to
15 feet for his fish jigging crawlers on a 1/8 ounce jig where a shoreline ledge jutted close to the main Sac River channel.

Christensen pitched 1/8 ounce Oddball  jigs by Bait Rigs and shiners into four feet of  water. Chunk rocks were the key. A few came in 7 to 12 feet. He concentrated his efforts in the Little Sac River. He has 11 money finishes on the PWT tour including a second, a sixth, a seventh and an eighth.

He also won the $1,000 Coleman Cool Under Pressure award, advancing from a “blank” on day one. And for catching and releasing nine walleyes, the most of any pro, Christensen won the
$500 T-H Marine Live  Release Award. With the cooperation of the Missouri Department of Conservation release boat, 129 of  133 walleyes weighed were successfully released, a 97 percent rate.

Chuck Tipton,Jr, Box Elder, SD, w

The  Heavyweight award of $500 for the heaviest one-day catch went to Mike
Gofron, AntiocH Illinois who brought a tournament limit of five walleyes to the scale weighing 16.42 pounds.

His amateur partner Andrew Pukstys, Chicago, IL, won a tackle box with $300 of  Lures.

Rich Crannick, the amateur winner, won a Flambeau TS 2000 Tackle Storage System for the heaviest weight on day three.

The  big fish on the final day went to amateur Scott Whitman, St Clair,MO, who landed a 6.30 pound walleye, the largest of the tournament. He won $1,500 and a graphite replica of his trophy. A duplicate will be enschrined in the Bass Pro Shops Gurnee, IL, store.

    John Peterson, Bemidji, Minnesota had a 4.89-pounder for $600, while Wallock’s 4.47-pounder paid $550.

Special accolades were awarded to the Walleye Super Pro host, the Lake Stockton Association and Pres ident Rod Hirchert, along with Ron Plymate, owner of Orleans Trail Marina.
