    Spring Valley Teams Captures Top Three Spots

    Gary Merkel and Brother Bruce Merckel from Spring Valley, Illinois won the fourth Team Walleye Tournament of the 2001 season.  Despite 12 degree temps and 34 degree water temps the brothers caught a five fish limit of Saugers weighing 11# 11.5 oz.  Gary and Bruce were fishing downstream of Barto Landing at the Clam Beds, using jigs and minnows.  Placing second was the team of Gary and John Dalzot from Spring valley with a five fish limit weighing 11#10 oz. Third place honors went to the team of Rory Barconi from Spring Valley and Dan Plautz with five fish scaling 11#5.5 ozs.  Forty-five teams participated in the tournament with 15 teams caching five fish limits.  There were 131 fish caught and released by the 45 teams participating weighing 234#   Big fish honors went to the team of Roy Perez and Troy Tregoning of Depue, Illinois with a walleye weighing 3# 12oz.

    Sparland and Pekin Team Scores Again

    Rick Parrott of Sparland and Dan Vinovich of Pekin, Illinois won their Fifth team Walleye tournament in as many years.  Rick and Dan out paced by the field by almost 2#.  With a five fish limit of 14# 3.5 ozs.  They were fishing around the Spring Valley Bridge early and then moved downstream to the Clam Beds and improved there catch.  They also captured big fish honors with a 4# 1.oz. Sauger. Second place honors went to Father and Son team from Ladd, Illinois Tom Giachetto Sr. and Tom Giachetto Jr. with five fish totaling 12#5ozs.  Finishing third was James Melton, Wyoming, Illinois and Rick Funcannon, Lacon, Illinois with five fish totaling 11# 11oz.  129 fish was caught and released by the 38 teams competing with a total weight of 272#. 22 teams had a five fish limit to weigh.  The next team walleye Tournament will be on March 18, 2001 Barton Landing Spring Valley.  If you would like more information contact Bob Kidd (309) 527-6328
