| Eagle River, Wis. (VILAS COUNTY) -- as of May 5, 2008:
(Head): Opener in the Eagle River, Wisconsin area, produced
good walleye and
perch action, but not much on size, along with a mixed bag of
northern.
The opening of the Wisconsin gamefishing season in the Eagle
River area
produced some good action for anglers, albeit there was wind,
rain and cold
temperatures. Water temperatures are in the lower 40s.
Walleye and perch both were biting well in the Eagle River
area. Walleyes
hit in 8 feet of water or less over hard bottom, on a one-sixteenth
ounce
jig, and a fathead minnow. The bite was almost exclusively smaller
males.
Some anglers fishing deeper, managed a few larger females here
and there,
but with the spawn just coming on, most of the walleyes in the
shallower
areas were males. The females have not quite come shallow yet.
The perch in the Eagle River area are also in 8 feet of water
or less, but
are biting over mud bottom. Use the same one-sixteenth ounce
jig and a
fathead as used for the walleye. Good action, but lots of sorting.
In the Eagle River area, some northern were hitting in the
walleye spots,
but to target the bigger fish, anglers were fishing 8 feet of
water or less
in and around old weed growth. Best action came on a classic
Rapala Husky
Jerk in a perch or minnow pattern. Some nice northerns were
caught, along
with good numbers of smaller "hammer handles."
Anglers in the Eagle River while generally satisfied with the
opening
weekend action, know that with a warmup, the action for bigger
fish will
both pick up rapidly.
