St. Germain, Wis. (VILAS/ONEIDA COUNTIES) -- as of 10-15-05 (See Events at end of Report). Musky and panfish hitting best in the St. Germain area. No turnover yet -- it's late this year. Water still too warm. We'll keep you posted (we need some consistent colder weather to foster turnover). You'll get action but right now you're going to need patience
and persistence. It's a light bite. Musky are your best bet right
now. Suckers are taking over as the prime attractant. Fish off the
mid-depth to shallower weeds (you should still be able to find green
weeds, which will provide the best areas to locate fish), in 6 to
12 feet of water. Our smaller lakes seem to be producing the best
numbers of musky, but if you want to try for bigger fish (albeit,
with less action), run on a deeper lake, using a deep running crankbait.
We've gotten Walleye action is just average. You can still get hits, but it's sporadic. Fish late afternoon into evening, and look for green weed areas, where you'll want to fish the edges, or you can work structure like rock or boulders, where there is some current movement. Depth can vary from 6 to 10 feet. Jig and a fathead is your best bait, with some action coming on crawlers. There's been some surprisingly good smallie action along weeds or deadfalls in 6 to 10 feet of water. The action is coming mainly to walleye anglers who are working these areas. The smallies are hitting the fatheads. Panfish are hitting pretty well. Fish 4 to 8 feet of water, and you'll get crappie and gills. Use a waxie for the gills, and a small minnow for the crappie. You can also try for these same fish in deeper water along crib sides. The depth can go up to 20 feet. So work the shallower areas first, and then move out and find the cribs. Perch are just off the bottom in the weed areas in 10 feet of water. Use a chunk of crawler or a small minnow.
