    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Green Bay To Host World's Richest Walleye Tournament

Top Pro could net $400,000 in Wal-Mart RCL Walleye Championship

Green Bay, Wis., (Sept. 19, 2001) - This championship will not be played out
on the city's legendary frozen tundra, but when the Super Bowl of walleye
fishing-better known as the Wal-Mart RCL Walleye Championship-kicks off Oct.
3, the stakes will just be just as high as anything the gridiron has to
    offer.

Top walleye anglers from more than a dozen states and Canada will be casting
in Green Bay and the Fox River for a share of up to $1.4 million with the
winning pro taking up to $400,000. The winning co-angler could walk away
with up to $150,000, making the Wal-Mart RCL Walleye Championship the
richest walleye tournament in history. Only the inaugural RCL Walleye
Championship held last year in Green Bay equals it.

The winner of that historic first championship, Scott Glorvigen of Grand
Rapids, Minn., received $300,000 and instantly joined the sport's top
all-time money winners. He will be one of 200 pros gunning for this year's
title, too. Gary Hettenhaus of Fond du Lac, Wis., who won $120,000 as the
top co-angler last year, will also be making a return appearance as one of
    the championship's 200 co-anglers.

Anglers competing in the championship represent the top competitors from the
Wal-Mart RCL Walleye Circuit and 35 qualifying organizations and events
sanctioned by the RCL. The winning pro is guaranteed the largest cash award
in walleye fishing-$150,000-and the opportunity to collect an additional
$250,000 in sponsor bonus cash from Ranger, Crestliner, Lund, Mercury and
Yamaha. The winning co-angler is guaranteed $75,000 cash and the opportunity
to collect an additional $75,000 in sponsor bonuses.

"The Wal-Mart RCL Walleye Championship is as big as it gets in competitive
walleye fishing," says Operation Walleye chairman Irwin L. Jacobs. "There
are 4 million people who fish for walleye each year in the United States and
for a select few this is the chance of a lifetime."

Operation Walleye introduced the Wal-Mart RCL Walleye Circuit this year and
conducted three qualifying events each with a $390,750 purse.

RCL Championship competition begins at 7 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, at Metro
Park Boat Launch on Bay Beach Road followed by a 3 p.m. weigh-in at the same
location. The Oct. 4 weigh-in also starts at 3 p.m. at the boat launch, but
the Oct. 5 weigh-in will be held at the Wal-Mart located at 2440 West Mason
Street starting at 5 p.m. The final weigh-in, Oct. 6, will also be held at
Wal-Mart starting at 3 p.m. Fishing fans can meet their favorite pros
    beginning at 6 p.m. Oct. 3 during a fish-fry cook-off to benefit Walleyes
for Tomorrow at Brown County Arena. A Family Fun Zone complete with children
's games, interactive product displays and giveaways will be set up at
    Wal-Mart starting at 3 p.m. Oct. 5 and noon Oct. 6.

Anglers will compete in three elimination rounds and one of two
divisions-pro and co-angler. After the two day opening round, the field will
be cut to the top 12 pros and co-anglers who will compete for one day in the
semifinal round. Co-angler competition ends after the semifinal rounds, and
only the top six pros advance to the final day of competition. Pros and
co-anglers are randomly paired and fish for the heaviest combined weight.
Catch weights carry over on the first two days but are cleared for the
    semifinal and final rounds.

Named after retail giant Wal-Mart and boat manufacturers Ranger, Crestliner
and Lund, the Wal-Mart RCL Walleye Circuit is the world's most lucrative
walleye fishing series. Jim Klick of White Bear Lake, Minn., won the RCL
season opener in April on Lake Erie near Port Clinton, Ohio, and collected
$50,000 cash plus a Mercury-powered Lund boat while his partner, co-angler
Cecil Newman of River Rouge, Mich., received $15,000 cash. Dan Plautz of
Muskego, Wis., won the second stop in June on Saginaw Bay near Bay City,
Mich., and received $50,000 cash plus a Yamaha-powered Crestliner boat while
his partner, co-angler Steve Campbell of Fife Lake, Mich., reeled in $15,000
cash. Kevin McQuoid of Isle, Minn., won the third stop in September on
Devils Lake near Devils Lake, N.D., and received $50,000 cash plus a
Yamaha-powered Ranger boat while his partner, co-angler Don Rosen of
Rosemount, Minn., reeled in $15,000 cash.
To register for competition or for more information about the Wal-Mart RCL
Walleye Circuit, visit www.operationwalleye.com or call 270-362-5259. Entry
fees for the championship are $1,500 for pros and $750 for co-anglers.

Super Bowl of walleye fishing begins in Green Bay
    by Jeff Schroeder - 3.Oct.2001
Nearly 400 anglers take off for 2001 Wal-Mart RCL Walleye Championship

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Titletown, U.S.A., opened its doors for a different kind of championship this morning as some 400 of the world's best walleye anglers set out on the mouth of the Fox River for the 2001 Wal-Mart RCL Walleye Championship, the richest walleye tournament in the history of the sport.

Last year Grand Rapids, Minn., pro angler Scott Glorvigen took home an unprecedented $300,000 for winning the inaugural RCL championship and instantly joined the sport's top all-time money winners. This week the winning pro has the potential to earn $400,000 and the winning co-angler could take home $150,000. A total purse of $1.4 million is on the line for four days of tournament fishing.

Wednesday marks the start of the opening round. The full field will compete today and tomorrow, fishing for a two-day combined weight to advance to Friday's semifinal round. Following Thursday's action both the pro and co-angler fields will be cut to the top 12 competitors in each division and will restart with zero weight Friday. Co-angler competition ends after Friday's action, but the top six pros will advance to Saturday's final round and again start with zero weight.

Weather will be a key factor this week as competitors decide where to seek their quarry. It was a clear, warm morning at start of day one's competition, but the forecast calls for falling temperatures and increased precipitation as the week wears on. There is even the possibility of scattered snow showers moving through the Green Bay area by Saturday. If the weather thickens, look for an increased number of competitors to stay on or near the Fox River to avoid the large swells on Green Bay.

Weigh-in begins today at 3 p.m. at Metro Park Boat Launch on Bay Beach Road at the mouth of the Fox River.

    Vital statistics

    Sunrise: 6:53 a.m.
    Temperature at takeoff: 60 degrees
    Expected high temperature: 66 degrees
Wind: From the southwest at 8 mph
    Relative humidity: 72 percent
    Day's outlook: Partly cloudy

    My brother’s keepers
    by Jeff Schroeder - 3.Oct.2001
Wisconsin's Keenan brothers capture top two spots on day one of Wal-Mart RCL Walleye Championship

GREEN BAY, Wis. – It didn't take long for the Keenan family to assert its presence at the 2001 Wal-Mart RCL Walleye Championship. Brothers Tom and Mark Keenan respectively placed first and second and established a commanding lead in the Pro Division on opening day after notching up the only two catch weights over 30 pounds.

Tom Keenan, who hails from Hatley, Wis., set the mark to beat early. One of the first pair of competitors to weigh in their fish, he and co-angler partner Jerome Chwierut of Glenview, Ill., placed five walleyes weighing 32 pounds, 1 ounce on the scale and never looked back.

“We just stuck it out there and got five good fish,” Tom said. “We didn't anticipate that much. We got a little lucky.”

There was a resounding disparity between the top five weights of the day – all caught by Wisconsin pros – and the rest of the field. Following Tom in second place was his older brother, Mark, who along with co-angler Brian Garrity of Wausau, Wis., brought in four fish weighing 30 pounds, 11 ounces. Pro Dean Arnoldussen of Kaukauna, Wis., and co-angler Trish Gauthier of Isle, Minn., placed third with five walleyes weighing 29-3. Pro Patrick Neu of Forestville, Wis., and co-angler Leo Schlauch of Suamico, Wis., placed fourth with four walleyes weighing 26-2. And fifth place went to pro Tom Zollar of Green Bay and co-angler Stephen Carpenter of Slave Lake, Alberta for four walleyes weighing 24-14.

The only other boat to top 20 pounds was that of sixth-place pro Jack Neuman of Naperville, Ill., and co-angler Greg Darsow of Billings, Mont. They caught three big fish weighing a collective 20 pounds, 7 ounces. After that, the field bunched up at around 13 pounds and under.

Big Walleye honors went the pro/co-angler team of Craig Lemieux and Mark Schleis who weighed in a 9-pound, 7-ounce fish. Lemieux, a pro from Neenah, Wis., earned $1,200 for the award and Schleis, a co-angler from Denmark, Wis., earned $600.

Deteriorating conditions played a key part in stifling many anglers' efforts today. While the day began sunny and calm, by afternoon the wind had picked up and precipitation moved in. That caused more than a few boats fishing on the open water of Green Bay to retreat into the shelter of the Fox River, and that had an impact on their catch weights.

A few of those who stuck it out on Green Bay, like Tom and Mark Keenan, were rewarded with hefty stringers and will likely face smooth sailing into the semifinals. Both brothers made roughly 20-mile runs to their fishing locations. While they weren't fishing in exactly the same spot, they admit that their cooperative effort in locating big keeper walleyes was one of the main reasons for their one-two punch Wednesday.

“Yeah, obviously we work together to find quality locations,” Tom said. “We can cover a lot more water with the two of us.”

“We share a lot of spots and knowledge,” said Mark, who hails from Appleton, Wis. “But this tournament is a little different because we usually fish together.”

Having fished together on the Master's Walleye Circuit for nine years, the Keenan brothers took team-of-the-year honors last year. Continuing the family tradition on the RCL circuit, Mark placed second earlier this year at Saginaw Bay while Tom placed eighth. In last year's RCL championship in Green Bay, Mark finished the tournament in ninth place.

But Tom counted day one of the 2001 Wal-Mart RCL Walleye Championship as one of the most memorable in Keenan family fishing lore. “It was a great day,” he said. “It was one of the best days my brother and I have had together.”

Tomorrow the Keenans, working together, plan to move to different locations and do some practicing for the upcoming rounds. With so few boats bringing in full five-fish stringers, they both know it won't take much weight on Thursday for either of them to qualify for Friday's 12-person semifinals.

“I think it's going to be good tomorrow,” said Tom. “You don't have to get many bites to do pretty well. If I catch one 2-pounder, I think I'll be fine.”

As for the rare brother combination sitting atop the leaderboard of the $1.4 million tournament, Tom naturally hopes for more of the same in the days to come.

“It is pretty cool,” he said. “Hopefully, it will stay that way the rest of the week.”

Competition resumes at 7 a.m. Thursday at Metro Park Boat Launch on Bay Beach Road when competitors take off for the final day of the opening round. Following Thursday's 3 p.m. weigh-in at the boat launch, the field will be cut to the top 12 pros and co-anglers. These anglers will advance to the one-day semifinal round Friday where the pros will compete for a spot in the final round and co-angler competition will be decided. Only the top six pros will advance to Saturday's final round.

Catch weights are carried over during the opening round, but anglers will start the semifinal and final rounds from zero. Weigh-ins Friday and Saturday will start at 5 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively, at the Wal-Mart Supercenter located at 2440 West Mason Street. A Family Fun Zone complete with children's games, interactive product displays and giveaways will be set up at Wal-Mart starting at 4 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday.
