Day 1 press Release
Detroit River Anglers Feel Spring
Sunshine and Solid Walleye 'Bite'
Trenton, Michigan....Spring officially arrived on
the Detroit
River today, at least if you measure it by plenty of sunshine and
temperatures pushing 60 degrees. Not only did the weather heat
up,
but so did the walleye "bite."
Following several days of clouds, rain and snow,
Mother
Nature finally smiled, and walleyes became active. They hit jigs
in
seven to 14 feet, and tried to eat trolled crankbaits.
Leading the first day of the Bass Pro Shops Mideast
Pro-Am
with 33.88 pounds is pro Kim Papineau, Escanaba, MI. He
was fishing
with amateur partner Robert Manz II, Eastpointe, MI, and caught a
5-fish limit. Each professional fishes with a new amateur partner
daily, which is why the In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail (PWT)
tournament circuit is acclaimed as the best training ground for
anglers to learn more about walleyes.
Holding second and third on the pro side are rookie
pros Rod
Hill, Hillsdale, MI, and Tom Dinneweth, Dearborn Heights, MI.
They
scored 33.86 and 33.48 pounds respectively.
Walleye seasons in many states will gear up within
the next
several weeks. On the Detroit River, 35 miles of connecting river
flowing from Lake St. Clair to Lake Erie, action begins as soon as
ice goes out. However, the walleyes waited for the PWT crew to
arrive. Many of the bigger fish just started their upriver
migration. Water temperatures ranged from 37 degrees in the upper
stretches to 44 degrees below the power plant. Most water was
running 38 to 40 degrees, and when it pushed even higher in
mid-afternoon, the action peaked.
In the rapid current, jigs in the 3/8 to 5/8 ounce
size
rigged with PowerBait and a minnow were preferred. Trollers favored
3-way rigs with weights to 12 ounces and one or two leads up to 30
feet back. These #7 and #9 floating Rapalas, Storm TunderSticks
and
PRADCO Rogues were pulled against the current, with the weight
keeping them on bottom.
Bass Pro Shops big fish were all over 10 pounds,
with amateur
Dave Lepley, Belleville, MI landing a $2,000 walleye that weighed
12.34 pounds. Pro Mike Gofron, Antioch, IL won $1,200 for an
11.44-pounder. Papineau's 10.88 pound walleye was worth $1,025
and
pro Will Lage, Rapid City, SD, won $950 for a 10.71 pound walleye.
Dozens of eight and nine pound fish came to the scales, and the 507
fish caught averaged 4.13 pounds.
The PWT anglers make news on the water and on the
web. A
Fantasy Walleye Challenge allows armchair anglers to select their
favorite pros and follow along with real-time scoring on the PWT
website, www.in-fisherman.com. The fantasy game is explained
on
www.fbc2000.com
The day two and three, Thursday and Friday, April
5 & 6,
weigh-ins occur at Elizabeth Park, part of the Wayne County parks
system in Trenton, beginning at 3 p.m. The next PWT Michigan
event
occurs July 18-20 in Sault Ste. Marie, and amateur openings still
remain. Contact PWT to enter.
