This week's headlines, plus special note on "turnover":

-- Walleye continue hitting strongly, with sturgeon and northern also being
taken on the south end of Lake of the Woods out of Sportsman's Lodge,
Baudette, Minnesota.

-- In the Wausau/Central Wisconsin area musky are tearing it up, the walleye
bite is fantastic, bass and crappie are biting strong, and some nice deer
are being be taken by bow hunters.

--With the onset of stable weather, fish are transitioning into their fall
patterns, resulting in a good and improving bite from musky, walleye, bass,
northern and panfish, in the Eagle River, Wisconsin area.

-- In the Rice Lake, Wisconsin area, the walleye and northern (44 incher
just caught) bite is very strong, with solid bass action, along with
consistently improving musky and crappie hits. Goose hunting is very good,
with a couple of nice bucks taken by bow deer hunters.

IMPORTANT DATES A FEW WEEKS OUT:

This week we're including a special explanation of "turnover."

"Turnover" is probably the single most misunderstood concept of fishing
yet, this yearly fall ritual can prompt some serious changes in your fishing
tactics...

First, water temperatures have a lot to do with turnover and we're not at
turnover yet. Water is most dense (heaviest) at 39 degrees F., and, as
temperature increases or decreases from 39 degrees F., it becomes
increasingly less dense (lighter). In summer and winter, lakes are
maintained by climate in what is called a stratified condition. Less dense
water is at the surface and more dense water is near the bottom.

During late summer and fall, air temperatures cool the surface water causing
its density to increase. The heavier water sinks, forcing the lighter, less
dense water to the surface. This continues until the water temperature at
all depths reaches approximately 39 degrees F. Because there is very little
difference in density at this stage, the waters are easily mixed by the
wind. The sinking action and mixing of the water by the wind results in the
exchange of surface and bottom waters, and this is called, "turnover." A
couple of tell-tale signs that a lake is going through turnover, are that
clear lakes become muddy, and there's sometimes an odor to the water from
the decaying vegetation from the bottom that's now making its way to the
top.

During spring, the process reverses itself. This time, ice melts and
surface waters warm and sink until the water temperature at all depths
reaches approximately 39 degrees F. The sinking, combined with wind mixing
causes spring "turnover." This describes the general principles; however,
other factors including climate and lake depth variations can cause certain
lakes to act differently. Take the Eagle River (Wisconsin) Chain of 28 lakes
(the largest freshwater chain of lakes in the world). It doesn't turn over
because it's moving water.

And the effect on fishing? A lake in the process of turnover has the oxygen
level consistent throughout the body of water, and that allows the fish to
really scatter, because it's now comfortable to travel at all depths. That
makes the job a little tougher to find them, no matter what species you're
talking about. But, the feeding pattern remains unchanged, so, find the
baitfish, or the structure, and you'll find what you're looking for.
Post-turnover is also prime time to use larger baits and suckers for
muskies. Then the feeding frenzy will be on for the big fish. (This
explanation of turnover thanks to Mike Michalak, Guides Choice Pro Shop,
Eagle River, Wisconsin)

North Bay charters Walleye fishing with Captain Tom Arlington

The fall season is in full swing. Perch are schooling and Muskie are getting big and sassy. Good perching can be found of the hump near the Rescue, and Belle rivers on the Canadian South shore. On the American side try the weed beds from 8 mile to Metro Beach. It hard to tell you exactly where to fish on a daily bases because the Perch are slowly moving to shore throughout the fall season. Move around by drifting until you get bits; toss a marker and fish until you get no more bits bring a strong anchor. Keep stirring the bottom-up if you can with a small anchor, this attracts minnows thus perch will be hunting them down. Bass seem to be around Perch at this time but if Pike or Muskie cruise in your fishing area you will have to move to another location or wait. Muskie begin a migration to shallow water looking for baitfish too. I was informed by DNR biologist their primary food in fall are shad. Shad are high protein fish allowing Muskie to but on needed weight for winter. Great Lakes Muskie are not on an “Aiken’s Diet” now. Use the biggest baits in your tackle box. Fall is the time for a real trophy. Now lets go fishin!

LAKE ERIE CAPTAIN HOCKENSMITH "WE DO FISH"
LAKE ERIE FISHING REPORT from Captain Ken Hockensmith of The Anglers Advantage

The weather has been mild for the last week and the Walleye bite is pretty good around the reefs in the Western basin, Bass Islands, Catawba and Marblehead.(contact Camp Perry range master on vhf channel 16 for firing range schedules, consult charts and use extreme caution navigating these areas some of these reefs lay just below the surface with current low water conditions) Anglers are catching fish on jigs & jigging spoons silver, gold, pink, white & chartreuse tipped with shiners also try blade baits & lipless cranks vertically jigged.(trick) tip your blades & cranks with shiners, it works! water temp 38f,  Air temps forecasted to warm into the 60's this week will surely bring out the anglers and warm up the fishing as well.  Anchor off the reef areas and use vertical presentations, for small boat anglers use your bow mounts & electronics to locate and hold over pockets of active fish and then have some fun. Don't forget the camera for that trophy Walleye. Practice catch and release, Those big females play and important roll in reproduction and really dont taste that good.
