Fishing Report For Rainy Lake, from Fort Frances, Ontario,
CANADA as of 08-12-00
Walleye: Einstein said, 'there is no knowledge
without experience'. In the last two week I have had some
fantastic
experiences. While pre-fishing for the Fort Frances Canadian Bass
Championships my partner and I stumbled on a strange but super
pattern
for hot summer mid-day walleye. (large ones to boot). Shallow
warm
water in current areas. I mean shallow!! 2 to 5 feet in narrows
where
water is flowing through. If weeds, rock or boulders are in the
narrows the better the spot. Numbers of huge walleye stack up
in
crevasses and boulders to cover themselves from the sun but they
are
willing to dart out and destroy many different baits. Jigs and
Kaolin
twister tails are working the best. 1/8 oz. unpainted darter
jigs and
minnow or shad colored 3 to 5 inch grubs are taking the most and
largest fish. Flip jigs into rocky areas with lots of dark holes
and
there are walleye present. You will also catch a bonus smallmouth
bass
or northern pike doing this. Be prepared to lose a few jigs.
Don't run
your boat into the structure area to retrieve a jig; just break it
off
and don't spook these shallow fish.
Smallmouth Bass:Smallies have just started
their move to summer locations. A bit late but better than never.
For
the past two weeks smallmouth have been incredibly shallow and
located
near main shorelines and weeds. We are starting to notice a movement
to humps and points now though. Top water baits like Baby Chug
Bugs ,
Rebel Pop 'R's and Rapala Skitter Pops are working great and
what fun
to fish. Try a number of things for the best results. Top water
over
humps and weed beds, jigs and jerkbaits in current areas and
all three
on points.
