Walleye fishing report for Taylor County /Medford WisconsinUpdated: 05/12/04Prepared by The Star News for Taylor County Tourism e-mail starnews@centralwinews.com May 6, 2004 Hooray! It's fishing season! Go catch some! Walleyes are biting in the Jump River, according to Roxanne Voldberg, the manager at 4 Season Sports in Jump River. One weighed in at about six pounds, she said. Try minnows or night crawlers between the Hwy 73 bridge and the swimming beach for the marble eyes. "They are hitting pretty hard," she said. A few anglers also are reporting good sucker catches as well. Richard Shotliff, co-owner of Rock Point Bait and Convenience Store in the Perkinstown area, said bluegills are starting to move in below Miller Dam. A few bass and northern pike also are being caught in the flowage. Beware, bass season isn't open yet in the area. Release them if you catch them, or you are in for a heck of a lot of trouble if caught. Shotliff said, "It is picking up some. It sounds like it is getting better, and a few people are getting some crappies." The fishing is slow. That is the report from Mudgett's Sports Shop near Gilman. Anglers are catching a few crappies with minnows or wax worms out of Miller Dam Flowage along Beaver Creek Road. "Once they start spawning it should pick up a little more," they said. Gary Ellenbecker, owner of Fuzzy's General Store and Bait Shop in the Lake Esadore area, said the cold water temperatures have cooled fishing. "It is pretty slow. The water hasn't warmed up enough yet," he said. Ellenbecker said warm weather combined with some rain should help warm up local lakes and streams.
