Press Release Day 1
PWT Pros Begin Unlocking
Lake of the Woods Secrets
Baudette, MN....
In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail (PWT) anglers headed onto Lake
of the Woods today and scattered to all corners of the large lake at the
Central Pro-Am.
They were competing for a share of $225,000, and the closest pro
angler
to the first place $50,000 prize after the first day was second year
pro Gerrick McComsey, Ft. Pierre, SD. He weighed a PWT 6-fish walleye limit
for 18.26 pounds. His amateur partner was Darren Anderson, Watertown, SD.
In second are pro
Reggie Thiel, Walker, MN and amateur Glenn Crose,Marion, IA with 17.47
pounds. Holding third place are rookie pro Barry Walker, Big Springs, NE,
and amateur Ron Smith, Hudson, WI with 16.97 pounds. Amateurs fish with
different pros on days two and three, with the winning amateur claiming
a Lund 17-foot boat, Mercury outboard and Eagle trailer, a $12,000 value.
A total of 53 limits came to the scales for the 140 sets of partners. Some
43 pros are within five pounds of leader McComsey.
Anglers fished rocky shorelines from six to 20 feet, with the 9 to 13
foot depth a preferred "spot." Anglers on the reefs fished down to about
30 feet deep, while some
anglers trolled crankbaits. A favorite presentation on the rocks and
reefs was rigs with crawlers or leeches. Another popular tacticwas a bottom
bouncer and spinner with a crawler. Some anglers dropped down to finesse
tactics with tiny hooks and a leech behind a bouncer. Some slowly
drifted with long leaders, small hooks and a piece of crawler or leech,
and gave the walleyes plenty of time to eat the bait.
Bass Pro Shops Big Fish awards, including first place and $2,000
went to amateur Harold Williams, Kerkhoven, MN, with a 7.52-pounder. McComsey
claimed $1,200 for second with 7.44 pounds. Third and $1,025 went to amateur
Dean Sime, Blaine, MN for a 6.16 pound walleye. Thiel anchored his
second place catch with a 6.15-pounder, good for $950.
The Pinnacle Bounty of $25,000 for a new PWT record (must beat
12.91 pounds), was not paid out, but two days remain in the tournament.
Final weigh-in festivities
take place Thursday and Friday on Wheeler's Point between the launch
ramp and Border View Lodge, about
a dozen miles north of
Baudette.

Two-Time PWT Winner Pete Harsh
Leads Lake of the Woods Tournament
Baudette, MN.
Pete Harsh, two-time In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail (PWT) winner
moved into first place with the largest catch of the Pinnacle Central Pro-Am
today. Harsh, from Sauk Centre, MN, and his amateur Jim Muzynoski, Bozeman,
MT, weighed 20.46 pounds.
Included in their catch was the largest walleye of the tournament, landed
by Muzynoski. The 10.44-pounder was also the Bass Pro Shops first
place daily fish worth $2,000.
Taking over second place was pro Dave Randash, Dilworth, MN, with
28.12 pounds. Dave was forced to go to a tiller boat formerly owned
by Mr. Walleye Gary Roach as he expeierienced motor problems on day 1.
First day leader Gerrick McComsey, Ft. Pierre, SD brought 9.30 pounds to
the scale and dropped to fourth place. Leading the amateur field is Muzynoski
with 33.22 pounds.
The overall catch was reduced as Lake of the Woods showed a different
mood with northeast winds blowing up to 20 mph. Waves on
parts of the
lake reached to six feet, but anglers negotiated the weather and hugged
lee shores whenever possible. Some fished the bays and the river. Day
two limits totaled 11 compared to 53 on day one.
Favored tactics included bottom bouncers and spinners with night
crawlers. Rigging with leeches was also popular. Walleyes were on rocks
in the 9 to 15 foot depths. Some fishing also occurred on the deep
points where rock reefs dropped into the main lake basin.
Other Bass Pro Shops Big Fish awards went to amateur Kevin Brown,
Motley, MN. His 7.57-pounder paid $1,200. Third and $1,025 went to
pro
Gary Parsons, Glidden, WI with a 7.42 pound walleye. Amateur Steve
Semenchuk, Duluth, MN earned $950 for a 7.41 pound fish.

Scott Fairbairn Wins $50,000 PWT
Victory on Lake of the Woods
Baudette, MN . . .
Scott Fairburn of Walker Minnesota hoists one of the fine walleyes caught
on day three that put him over the top. this is scotts second win on the
PWT tour. Scott's previous win was at Fort Peck Montana where he
was able also to pull off a great three day weight which also netted him
that time angler of the year.. Day three seems pretty good for Scott
as he waited out his fish that day and was able to bring to the scales
a whopping 25.24 lbs.
Lake of the Woods smiled at the In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail
(PWT) contestants on Friday, June 2, the final day of the Pinnacle Central
Pro-Am. It started out rainy, blowing 4-foot waves from a 20 mph northwest
wind, but conditions settled by 10 a.m., and the lake flattened, allowing
anglers to make precise presentations for post-cold front walleyes.
Winner
Scott Fairbairn, Walker, MN solved the puzzle and landed a final day catch
of 24.24 pounds, collecting the $50,000 first place prize. The award included
a 20-foot Lund boat, 200-hp Mercury outboard and a dual-axle Eagle trailer.
His total weight was 45.22 pounds.
This marked Fairbairn's second PWT victory. He holds 10 top 20 place
finishes, including a fifth place in South Dakota earlier this season.
He is also a past In-Fisherman Angler of the Year. He fished reefs west
of Knight Island in 18 to 30 feet of water. "The rock tips provided driveways
for
walleyes to move from the lake basin to the reefs to feed, and I waited
all day for them to move up," he said. His presentation:
Northland Rock Runner sliding bottom bouncers (3/4 oz.) with a Mustad Neon
#6 hook on a 3 to 4 foot leader and a large leech, that had to be
swimming.
Claiming
second with 41.89 pounds was Eric Naig, Storm Lake, Iowa. He won $15,000.
Third place and $10,000 went to 3-time PWT winner Chris Gilman, Chisago
City, MN. The amateur winner of the Lund, Mercury, Eagle boat package was
Jim Muzynoski, Bozeman, MT.
Bass Pro Shops big fish for the tournament went to Muzynoski with a
10.44-pounder. He won $2,500. First place today went to Fairbairn.
His
9.32 pound walleye paid $2,000. James Broberg, Albert Lea, MN caught
an
8.45 pound fish for the $1,200 second place award. Third and $1,025
went
to Glenn Rosenfeldt, Sabin, MN for a 7.62-pounder. Fourth place and
$950
went to Doug Palmer, Maplewood, MN with a 7.58 pound fish.
Special awards included the Storm Heavyweight award for the biggest
daily catch to Fairbairn and amateur Ryan Lohse, Coon Rapids, MN for
their third day catch. They won $500 and $300 respectively. Naig won
the
T-H Marine Live Release $500 award for placing highest and releasing
the
most walleyes. Advancing the most places, 82, through the event earned
pro David Spaid, Ft. Pierre, SD $1,000 as the Coleman Cool Under
Pressure award winner. Amateur Lohse moved up 89 places and earned
$600.
A total of $225,000 was awarded as a large crowd of walleye fans enjoyed
the weigh-in ceremonies under sunny skies. Jill Amundson, tournament
coordinator received the honorary PWT "Key Award" for her commitment to
a successful event. Mike Trueman, owner of Borderview Lodge was awarded
the PWT "Host Award" for the site and cooperation of the Lodge's staff.
The PWT tour travels next
to Sault Ste. Marie, MI, June 21-23.
Leading the In-Fisherman Angler of the Year race is Shannon Kehl,
Bismarck, ND. At the top of the
Dee Zee Western Division is Reggie Thiel, Walker, MN. All standings
